I agree with the premise of your arguments Fred and Stehr in that you do need to buy the odd player to construct your team around (foran is a classic example that would be good for us now). the roosters approach however would be to get rid of anasta at the end of the year and sign SBW not someone like foran and hope that mortimer/littlejohn or 'someone else' can play 6. problem is that SBW plays 2 positions (backrow and centre) where we are very well served through the juniors and in first grade so what we end up with is losing all our young talent and not solving the 6 problem.
Brian smith's main failing with respect to amassing a sqaud in the past is that he cant balance the 1 or 2 superstar purchases with the developed team. Smith puts the broom through a place like he has now with us and then hopes that the kids left will deliver the goods. this rarely works. the difference between him winning and losing a comp is that carney type player that his teams never seem to have or at least dont have enough of. Maybe our management (Politis) and smith might then ironically be a match made in heaven. On the one side of the coin you have a bloke that wants all the big names and 'superstars' and at the other end of the spectrum you have a bloke who wants to put all his faith in unproven players and the junior system. If they can meet somewhere in the middle, i think we will be in business
