They don't look any further than their footballing talent alone, where they should also be looking at his attitude, commitment and persona. Also different styles of player thrive at different clubs, depending on the type of footballing being played and how they are being coached and by whom.

I take Sandow as an example, whom I reckon will bomb out severely at the Eels when forced to play the structured style Kearney is determined to force onto the Parramatta team. Sandow is not a structured type of player, he plays what he sees in front of him.

tbh, i think the issue is more than just the 'beyond the footballing talent' stuff. for me it even extends to players in positions that we actually need. mason and omeley are classic examples of signing 2 props for the heck of it based on their playing reputation etc yet as a result we lost the likes of harrison, shillington to name a couple. both have since gone onto to feature heavily for QLD in their origin successes and in shillington's case for Australia. That is the sort of stupid stuff we do. Its never about a balance of playing styles and skill sets when we open the cheque book its more a matter of who is the 'best' player off contract, lets pay him whatever he wants and where he will play we will figure out when he gets here. Smith for one is starting to turn this around to be fair to the guy.

I agree with the premise of your arguments Fred and Stehr in that you do need to buy the odd player to construct your team around (foran is a classic example that would be good for us now). the roosters approach however would be to get rid of anasta at the end of the year and sign SBW not someone like foran and hope that mortimer/littlejohn or 'someone else' can play 6. problem is that SBW plays 2 positions (backrow and centre) where we are very well served through the juniors and in first grade so what we end up with is losing all our young talent and not solving the 6 problem.

Brian smith's main failing with respect to amassing a sqaud in the past is that he cant balance the 1 or 2 superstar purchases with the developed team. Smith puts the broom through a place like he has now with us and then hopes that the kids left will deliver the goods. this rarely works. the difference between him winning and losing a comp is that carney type player that his teams never seem to have or at least dont have enough of. Maybe our management (Politis) and smith might then ironically be a match made in heaven. On the one side of the coin you have a bloke that wants all the big names and 'superstars' and at the other end of the spectrum you have a bloke who wants to put all his faith in unproven players and the junior system. If they can meet somewhere in the middle, i think we will be in business

    • Once again the club has proven that by buying established stars we are winning again, well fancy that.

              • Ray, you were the one accusing me of bagging mini the other day right. Bit hypocritical dont you think?
Don't worry about answering that question I couldn't be ****ed reading your response.
This whole issue comes down to balance. Young up and coming players the club has developed and a few stars mixed in. That is what we have this year. Fingers crossed we can reap the rewards come the end of the season

correct, you buy what u need and the most important aspect is to develop as much as u can.

Surely we can raise the funds amongst us for Ray to have a night out (or at least an hour!) at The Cross.
C'mon Roosters, help a fellow Chook in need!!

                          • I believe that Glenn Stewart would have been the one out of the Stewart that our club should have attempted to sign.
