In 2010 they played him at half back with the odd game at 5/8, and both Hayne and Moi Moi were down on form.
It affected Mortimers form/performances.
In 2011, the Storm and Dragons did a number on him, they obviously did their home work.
In other games, he actually played well, and I posted his stats in 3 games where he performed just like in 2009.
If we play as a solid unit, and everyone plays their part, this will give Mortimer every opportunity to capture that form.
I'm backing him to do well.
The hayne factor was also big but whilst we dont as yet have a 'hayne' (although tagive, moga, RTS and wells may have something to say about that), as a unit, SKD, maubs, guerra, pearce, leilua in their own right can create stacks of opportunities if given a chance. a lot of people have suddenly decided that SKD was only good last year because of carney. that is crap. SKD has been our top try scorer (or at least top 2) since he entered firsts in 08/09. The bloke has never had trouble finding the chalk and has always been a highly elusive ball runner who has a phenominal ability to bust a tackle and get the arm free. His problems have always been consistency, errors and defence. Unfortunately this year in a team not performing so well and with him getting very little ball and when he did get the ball, having little space to move blunted his effectiveness and allowed the sore points of his game all of which are still a work in progress to shine through. Dont discredit the effect no maubs and perrett also had on him. those 3 combine brilliantly as a unit and complement each other fantastically well. if anything you can credit maubs, pearce (for the passes he was putting on maubs and SKDs chest in 2010 and perrett for SKDs 2010 form. Carney was a big factor but SKDs best centre of the year award last year was no fluke. i have said it since he debuted, the kid can play. he has only played 2 seasons of centre and overall, you would be hard pressed to have him outside the top 5 in the world. On his day he is up there with inglis.
In short, we have enough there for mortimer to play off the back off. its a number of other factors that will affect whether he sinks or swims for us. i hope its the latter

If we go forward, it gives him every chance to shine.

Reality
Anasta -Reject
Mortimer- reject
Carney- Reject
What does it tell you ? this club does not like to buy football brains. The year buldogs won the comp I think Anasta's try assists was two.
Another disappointing year where the forwards will do their job only to let down by the backs.

Rugby league isn't a one man game.
If all those around you fail to produce, you will find it hard to do 'your thing'
Mortimer was shoved into half (wrongly IMO)
Moi Moi failed to go forward as did all other Eel forwards.
Hayne produced jack sh@t.
Mortiimer unfairly labelled, in your opinion, a reject.

I'm not sure he is suited to it but was carney?
A good question, and something worth looking a little more in depth at.
I won't make judgment until i see some stats

Playing Mortimer at fullback could prove a very astute move from Smith.
It worked wonders with Carney in 2010, giving him time and confidence before being thrust into the pressure role of five-eighth.
Perhaps it is what Mortimer needs to be able to get back to his best.
It wouldn't surprise me if we saw Smith revert to 2010 with Minichiello on one wing, and Mortimer at the back. The trials will be interesting.
