  • Do I like the ad? No

Do I give a shit about the ad and the controversy? No

Not enough footy in the ad. Ch9 and Fox ads much more footy related.

Or were the nrl going for the old saying, any publicity is good publicity lol.

Bottom line, who really cares. Bring on round one. Go Easts.

Well said. I just want to watch some footy. Our game is not the place for Australia to work out its issues with the gay and indigenous topics. Also, I am sick of the women's game now being sold as part of the men's. It is a shit sport played at an amateur level. They are not professional athletes. They exist at a professional level due to political correctness. I'm happy for women to develop their sport but not on the coattails of the NRL.

Your name says it all Oaps!

For everything you pointed out the game is not about, is actually everything this game is about. Inclusiveness.

Come play the game, support your team or watch on tv.

For the game to grow on any level, it needs to explore frontiers beyond the current supporter set.

Also governments demand these structures when assessing whether sports obtain any funding from them.

I for one, can’t see a problem with more people following the game, only benefits.
          ..it’ll be interesting to see

            This is so true.
When the AFL formed the GWS Giants I scoffed at their ability to ever make inroads into western Sydney. NRL is the Sydney and NSW code of choice. The fact is though if the NRL doesn’t change with the times the AFL will make inroads. They’re in for the long haul and are infiltrating through the schools and grass roots level. The NRL does need to continue to remain relevant to families and young kids, including dare I say it, girls. I’ve married into an AFL mad family and I’ve always stuck up vehemently for rugby league over that annoying sport and told them the AFL have no hope of knocking rugby league off the number one spot in NSW. But in generations to come, I fear they may well have made great inroads. Maybe not in ten years time, but the NRL needs to appear to be appealing to everyone not just it’s traditional rusted on supporters. The AFL, as annoying as it is, seems to appeal to families.

But that is where you are wrong in my opinion. "Inclusiveness" is nonsense. Its a catch word or a marketing phrase. I'm happy for anyone to play. If the women can ever produce a spectacle to rival the men then I will happily follow it. The women are boring and play like shit. I'm happy for anyone to follow the game but jumping on issues of the day is unlikely to grow the sport.

I have seen a clip of Latrell from the ad though. Probably why so many on here don’t like it. I think your thoughts would be different if he was still a Rooster. Anyway a bit of a risk featuring Latrell seeing he will be going walkabout at some point in the not too distant future.
Actually my thoughts would be no different if he were still a Rooster - simple fact is the indigenous flag should not be the only one represented in the ad. It's a moot point anyway, as he would not have been promoted to NRL poster boy if he was still a Rooster - not under Greenburg's watch anyway. It's all about the Vermin.

Problem is Skeez, when you disenfranchise your current supporter set and run the risk of having them walk away from the game and not enough new supporters are bought in by the 'inclusive' message to replace them. So you end up being worse off than where you started out.

League supporters in general do not want politics or agendas involved in footy in any way shape or form. It's what many follow the game to get away from!

                  • The advertisement is for the people who aren’t as ‘league mad’ as us. The people who may not realise the new season is a week away. To also remind them, it’s more than just a sport.

For me, the advertisement isn’t going to affect my support of the game. If anything it would only strengthen it.

Latrell wrapped in his peoples flag is wonderful. Indigenous players make up 12% of the NRL which is five times more than their representation in our population. It’s one of their strengths and let’s be proud of that and hope that they prosper.

We have the advantage of having a close bond and association with the late, great Arthur Beetson and that should never be forgotten.

You could also look at people of Italian heritage. If greats such as Anthony Minichiello hadn’t encouraged future greats such as James Tedesco to continue to pursue his love of the game, maybe we don’t have two successive premierships to celebrate?

Females make up half the population and let’s include them in the game rather than exclude. Hardly just a buzzword if it means leaving out half the available market.

Which is why the original 1989 and 1990 advertisements worked so well. They had a female pop singer who happened to be of African descent (albeit foreign) sing a song that was relatable to the game we followed. Bingo, it worked! And the game prospered in arguably its most popular period.

In a climate of mergers and acquisitions in the business world, it would be prudent to examine areas of opportunity to grow the game outside it’s current areas and avoid being swallowed up by another force, whether it be a sport or even entertainment source. It is the current custodians biggest job.

                    Grow or die.

Skeezer, I didn't say the women can't play. In my opinion they have not developed a product that is going to compete with other top sports. Sure lets include women, gays and all races. I totally agree with that. I'm highly supportive of women, the gay community and indigenous Australians. It has been my experience that these topics are divisive to NRL supporters in general. For example, I love the use of the Indigenous flag and dislike the anthem. I think the majority feel differently though and get pretty bloody upset discussing it. Also does anyone really think the NRL is about to take a huge slice of the gay market and have them follow NRL? nahhh
