Maybe...with all that's going down...there's no time for testing...given the flood of new applicants...it's easier and
quicker to just have a blanket payment.
      Angry?
Not worth getting lines on your face about.
There's always a certain percentage of people who are basically unemployable, better they're on benefits than an employer is forced to take them.

      • Reportedly, the lines at Bondi Centrelink yesterday were very long.
Police were called to manage the orderly crowd as not everyone was going to be able to have at interview on the day.
One lady was led away in tears, saying she only had $10 left in her bank account.
        Sad.

Not hard at all to have a letter from you ex employer. Simple as that. Would take no time at all.

I see see your point about certain types that are better off unemployed but no employer is forced to employ anyone. It goes hand in hand. The employer needs employees of which he employs those who need to work. It’s fair to help both parties if circumstances like the crisis destroys that process. It’s not fair to reward those who were not part of that process and are not disadvantaged in any way by not losing a job they didn’t have. That lot will not stimulate the economy in any way whatsoever.

It's not quite that simple. A lot of employers are out of their depth in the current situation and have their own issues to deal with, especially if it's a small business, or a business that hasn't been run efficiently. Unfortunately, writing letters for ex-employees wouldn't be a high priority at this time.

I disagree. I think it would be very simple to offer someone a letter of severance when they are laid off.

Of course there are other issues at hand for everyone to be considering right now but peoples livelihoods should be at the forefront along with health for all which is what has bought us to this point.

                • That's disgraceful from Qantas.

I've been stood down without pay for an indeterminate period of time and received a letter from my employer ASAP.

They held a meeting and handed everyone their "stand down notice". It shouldn't be difficult.

Im not an expert at all but I would think it should be part of being laid off. How can she be laid off without formal written notice? Surely she would have received an email to advise of such and then why cant that letter be used to do what I suggested?

Apparently they are looking into it , she moved to Queensland from Sydney week before this happened and something has gone astray , I'm sure it will be sorted but it shows if it can go wrong with a big company , imagine the small ones that are simply mum and dad employers that have no idea how to deal with this ,

Its not difficult at all. I just dont see why these notices cant be used to determine those who should be getting the doubled new start allowance and those who shouldnt.

Hope things look up for you mate. Never happened to me so I wouldnt know where to start or what to do. Good luck!
