Cody Walker has responded to the video footage of a fight that was reportedly used to blackmail the Rabbitohs star.
Speaking on Channel Nine, Walker explained why he became so defensive in karate kicking a man and stressed he would accept any punishment the game deemed necessary.

“I was trying to protect a family member after the loss of one of my first cousins who we lost through suicide,” Walker said on Channel Nine News.

“She was 24 years of age and we were grieving her. Seeing her brother who is my first cousin, seeing him fight the first thing that popped into my head was I just need to stop it.”

Walker admitted he was drinking at the time as his family grieved the loss of someone so close to them.
It was a very emotional time for myself and the family leading into that week,” Walker explained.

That's the line I'd be using if I were defending him in court or before the Souths and NRL tribunals.
If he played for our club, ditto.
I believe it's a reasonable excuse. I can see how a person might do that, given the circumstances.
What the cops decide to do is up to them.

Having said that, I hope he doesn't play against us in round 3.

        • Hope our players are not spending 'all' their time at training learning to hate other teams.
They should be concentrating on playing footy to a high standard, not worrying about winning because of club feuds.

            Surely he coulda either:
            - grabbed his cousin and been like 'duuuude it's not worth it, calm down... hit me if you need to hit somebody'; or
            - used a tackle rather than a kick then pinned him using some league skills until he calmed down.

Just saying - kicking a guy isn't gonna end a fight, it's gonna escalate it and end up with you in the slammer (unless you're a protected species).

also do not be surprised if no actual extortion attempt was made, and Walker\ Souffs knew the video was coming out and tried to fire the first bullet to prevent it from happening, Mark Geyer style

                  • Didn’t Chrissy Sandow used to love getting into street fights as well?

Wonder if he was grieving the death of anyone or anything. His footy career maybe?

I don't hate any team. Best not to hate teams, half of them could be playing for the Roosters "next year". Cody Walker played for the Bears, Titans, Storm?
Luke Keary was a Rabbit, as was Angus Crichton.
                      Too hard hating people.
I was seriously displeased though when some smart ass Broncos supporters sitting behind me at Suncorp deliberately spilt beer over my bags and clothes.
                      Never went there again.
Cody Walker does seem like a nice family man to me. He'll be judged by the powers that be for this incident, and says he will accept without appeal whatever punishment comes his way.
He should stop drinking. Alcohol can abolish inhibitions and reasoned thinking.

                      Souths troll?
I'd be saying exactly the same thing no matter which club he played for.

RL fans marched for Souths to stay in the comp, because it was the right thing to do. What if it had been, or at some future time is, the Roosters that get kicked out.
A now deceased uncle of mine was an avid Souths supporter, as near perfect a man as one could find, Vietnam vet, loving husband and father.
                      He would've been absolutely horrified if he'd seen that large banner Souths supporters put up at ANZ stadium when they played us that read;
                      "Sc.., Forever In Our Shadow".

                      • Mr Handshake admitted he knew from day 1 ....once again Souffs have hidden it from the league
Shouldnt they be punished for it?
If it was dealt with from the beginning there would be no blackmail and the hooha we have now .
By the way Souffs are desperate to boot Bennet out .... They are holding back hoping he quits.
                        ASAP.
                        Love it .

                        • One punch can kill.
Exactly why punching was banned in the NRL.

A SINGLE punch put former Wests Tigers halfback Craig Field in jail for 10 years. James Phelps went to Cessnock Maximum Correctional Centre to speak to Field.
From earning $600,000 a year as an NRL star to $60 a week in a prison print shop. This is the shocking story of how a single punch put former Wests Tigers halfback Craig Field in a maximum-security prison for ten years.
Sunday Telegraph sports reporter James Phelps went behind the walls of Cessnock Maximum Correctional Centre to speak to Field about his fall from grace.

“Mate, how does a guy that was earning $600,000 a year end up here?’’ I fire.

“How does a bloke that played 183 first grade games, a bloody legend, end up thanking some journo he has never met for a packet of snakes and some socks?’’

To be fair, a lot of guys in prison were making $600k+ a year before being locked up.

I used to work in a prison (supporting a family on a single income) and every day I had guys who were like:
                              - I can hook you up with way more money than you're making, driving trucks for [insert fruit shop at the markets]. You'll be sweet so long as you don't get greedy. Here's a number...
                              - Want a new Benz? I can get you one for [ridiculously low price]. Here's a number.

There's $$$ to be made doing dodgy shyte. I'm happy being a mediocre lawyer on average money though

                              • Can't aggree with you on this BB.

A running kick to the chest by a very strong, 90kg athlete is not a blow of a minor nature, and suggesting you were trying to defuse a fight by assaulting one of the participants doesn't really gel. Often, a significant factor in "one punch" deaths is the head striking the ground or other solid object when the victim falls. Fortunately in this incident that didn't happen, however it was a potential outcome.

I dont know Cody Walker and we have all made mistakes, but perhaps a "good family man" could have been at home supporting and comforting those in need following the death of his cousin rather than drunk and brawling on the streets of Casino.
