Closest would be Greg Alexander off the top. Debut at 19, and probably the most talented half I've seen. Unfortunate for him that there were so many great halves in that era who probably weren't as talented, but more consistent.

He was incredibly unlucky. Had a lot of competition in that era in the halves with Sticky, Langer, Sterling, Lewis, Daley etc
Also had a bad run with injury, and the loss of his brother to contend with.

in todays game size is everything the days light backs and small halves and even smsll hookers are over anything under 85kg its would be hard especially in defence once upon a time 85kg was starting weight for a 4ward sam walker would have to put on weight just a fact

I agree. On his day Brandy was truly something else. Despite his lofty achievements, still underachieved.

All the great halfbacks are at their prime when they are nearing their careers.

Pearce for his age when he made his debut was quite good.

Compared to Gower.......Alexander was definitely a better ball runner, was quicker, had a better step and swerve, was more skilful, had a better pass, was a better defender especially in cover, was a better reader of the play, better goal-kicker and was blessed with more natural talent. Everything else Gower was better than Alexanader!!

Brandy was one of my favourite players growing up along with Horrie & Steve Mortimer. Brandy & Gower were 2 very different players. Brandy had finesse, Gower was more into the tough stuff.

Its not that, if he really was that goods he would have played 20s already., I have no idea how good this kid is or what potential he has. Buts lots of talk means stuff all if he doesn't get on the park at a "real" level and plays against men and he hasn't even played against big boys much

I have heard that so many times, but it just isn't true.
Kids that are not big in the majority are just not given a chance unless they have connections.

Thurston, Toovey and Langer were all considered too small. Luckily for them they persisted and didn’t listen to the doubters. Halfbacks are usually smaller players anyway. They are also usually smarter too.
