NRL clubs will spend the next 24 hours making the gut-wrenching decisions to tell half of their football staff not to return when training starts again next week.

Clubs were told on Wednesday they will be capped at just 18 staff members at training with the rest of their 50 pre-approved list to be made up of players. That is about 50 per cent less than what some clubs generally operate at meaning chief executives and head coaches will now make some tough calls after Project Apollo confirmed the restrictions.

The number of officials allowed to attend matches is also slashed with just 20 players and 12 staff members permitted. Clubs could generally have up to 50 staff at any home match with some club bosses also considering watching matches on TV.

    THE NEW NRL

    – Clubs allowed to report in on Monday for educational purposes only.

    – Training resumes Tuesday.

    – Pre-approved list of 50 people only for training which includes 32 players and 18 staff, dropping staff levels by half. Lists of 50 for training.

    – Only 20 players and 12 staff members per club allowed on game day.

    – Clubs will be monitored by a “COVID cop” attached to each team.

Tough decisions made that impact people’s livelihoods. All the worse when a few put even that at risk

      Indeed.

But wait, there's more, the players are refusing to start training:

news of players refusing to recommence training on Monday, May 4.

According to the competition's revised timeline, clubs were going to be permitted to train together under heavy restrictions from Monday, though that now appears unlikely.

On a phone hookup with representatives from all teams on Wednesday, the players reportedly agreed to not start training until they reached an agreement with the League over pay and conditions.

"Senior players on a call with the Rugby League Players' Association last night agreed unanimously to not return to training on Monday," Fairfax's Neil Breen told Nine News.
"That throws the season start on May 28 into serious jeopardy. The reason is they do not have a new pay deal with the NRL.

"The players were promised by the NRL that by [Wednesday] they would receive many things, including all the biosecurity details, all the new rules they had to live by, also a new pay deal.
"They were informed by the NRL that wouldn't be able to be given to them for about a week.

"While they had agreement with the broadcasters Nine and Fox Sports to start the season on May 28, they don't have new commercial agreements with the broadcasters and they're toing and froing over how much money they will pay."

Breen said Warriors pair Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Blake Green aired their concerns, with the Auckland-based outfit reportedly scheduled to arrive in Australia on Sunday ahead of two-week quarantine, possibly in Tamworth.

"They were then backed by players from other clubs, led by Cam Smith from Melbourne, a delegation from the Roosters back them and they agreed unanimously that until the NRL came through with a pay deal that they wouldn't train on Monday," Breen added.

"The players are extremely concerned about the public perception of this move from them but they have done it in solidarity with their brothers from the Warriors who do not want to separate from their families and locate themselves in Australia without the NRL holding up its end of the bargain."

Obivously the players want their money, it's not like they play the game because they enjoy playing.

If this article is true, NRL doesn't have commercial agreements with the broadcasters in place yet...not signed sealed and delivered.
And therefore doesn't know how much money the broadcasters will be paying.

            All roads lead to lawyers.
Players will likely have to sign new contracts with the New NRL. New
workplace contracts with new rules...including new insurances.
Can't see how they can set one foot into the new NRL without everything in place.

            Should be about another week?
            What if it's not?
As it is May 28 seems impossible now.
That means the start date will now be pushed into June something.

Watch more rounds get chopped off the season now and the comp become 15 more rounds not 18 more.

Sure they wouldn’t be putting their bodies through that without financial reward, but do you honestly think Jarred doesn’t enjoy bashing people and doesn’t Keary doesn’t enjoy putting on a try? I think many players would think they have the best job in the world. Plus great benefits (See recent video and pics of Nathan Cleary. This guy would be refused at a brothel if he wasn’t a footballer).

And now that I think about it, I guess you're right, they would need their money and I guess they do enjoy playing, please excuse my ignorance.

Also, I'm surprised about Cleary's antics, I though he was the complete opposite. Guess you learn something new everyday.

Unlike Pinocchio I think Cleary’s chin grows every time he lies.

Many women seem to like that strong, macho features look.
