  • Sam Verrills

With Uncle Nick coming out and saying Friend will be on one-year deals as long as he wants to play after this season I can’t see Verrills sticking around.

    He’s a pretty big loss.

Anyway, hard to complain when we are about to win our third premiership in a row.

Hopefully he gets a game soon to keep him happy.

Hopefully that premiership ring Sam has doesn't diminish his desire to play for the chooks fulltime in the future

I would be lying if I said i'm not afraid of losing Verills soon.

You've mind****ed me with the double negatives in that sentence

I've come around to the thinking that Jake Friend deserves to play 300 games for this club and go out on his own terms. He's obviously a true heart and soul legend and if we were to waiver in our loyalty to him then that'd potentially eat away at the amazing culture within the club.

If it costs us Verrills then so be it. But hopefully he's willing to hang around until Jake hangs up the boots; which I predict to be the end of 2022. Just a guess.

He'll be 32, 300+ games and will have led us to 5 straight Premierships. Quite a way to go out.

            Indeed.
            He's an x factor player,
            He must be kept.
I foresee big offers from other clubs.
We can't afford to lose him.

I'd hate to see Verrills go. For a start as we found out last year you need a genuine back up hooker. I mean there was talk of Michael Liccha or Cameron King covering Friend, Bloody hell we wouldn't have made the GF let alone win it with either of them as the starting hooker. Radley hates playing hooker and is more effective as a running ball playing back rower anyway. So the cupboard is bare if Friend gets injured.

Plus Verrills is just 21. His passing is exceptional and a great dummy half runner. I hope he stays

Sam was picked by Trent. He is being groomed for the role and now he has to wait his turn. The next few years the will be a huge roster change coming and we need to solidify our centre. Sam keary flanno are our key.

i don't know how to take the 'rooster for life, one year at a time' description. on the face of it, it means we're not guaranteeing jake to play with us for a period longer than a year. no doubt we will do the right thing by jake, but i see nick's comments as not shutting the door on sam. we're not offering jake a 4 year contract.

I don’t know about Nick. One year deals sounds like good business given Jakes age and recent injury troubles, which I believe to be worse than they let on.

That being said, Jake was outstanding against Parra. Tough bugger.

The same with Cordner. You can see why picking players like them to be captain is inspiring to their fellow players.

He must stay, the Club must make it happen.
He must not be allowed to get away.

Jake might get injured ...then we'd be stuffed.

Verrills might be tempted by an $800,000 a season for 5 years offer from a lesser club looking to rebuild.
It's what I'd do if I were running a lesser club.
Fine style of a young man. Scored a try in the GF. Good player.
You can't live in a premiership ring.

800 a year for Sammy V - glad you are not running our roster .

Jake can stay at the club forever but will Nick be forcing Trent to pick him even if he's form slips in a year or two?

I fear that with all the problems Manly have with their roster and in particular their lack of good hookers, he might answer their call.

The dogs have a lot of money next year and I'm sure they will throw a lot of money at him and give him an opportunity to play first grade.
