    Roosters suffer first loss

    29/05/2009 10:46:00 AM
THE run of victories by the Agi Hotel senior Roosters came to an abrupt end last week when they traveled to Nelson Bay to take on the in-form Marlins in a top of the table clash.

    Reserve grade

The Roosters were jumped early in the first quarter, with the Bay team slamming on four quick goals before the Roosters had woken up to the fact that they were in a fair dinkum game of footy. The physically bigger and more disciplined Marlin outfit were on song right from the first bounce and really showed the lethargic Roosters how to play tough, hard running team footy, going into the first break with a commanding six goal lead.

The Roosters were sorely missing their spearhead Sam Brasington, who was out due to a hamstring strain whilst at the other end of the park, the Marlin forwards were causing great concern for coach Dave Stefani, who was forced to make some positional moves to even up the contest.

The second quarter was a much more even affair. The Roosters went to the long break having handed the Marlins a seemingly match winning seven goal advantage. But all was not lost and, after some soul searching, the Roosters came out in the third term and outscored their opponents, but they went into the final term still six goals down.

The final term proved to be a disappointment, with early forward surges by the Roosters to no avail, leaving them goalless, with two late goals to the Bay ending all hope of a Rooster resurgence. Unfortunately captain Brendan Stats was lost during the quarter to concussion; a pity as he had played his heart out along with Andrew Macpherson in the centre. Lloyd Blaxland was swung into the ruck in this term to give the rotating Andrew Kilmartin and Don Hornby-Waring a break and, despite not having played the position at senor level, performed admirably against the Bay’s best in Shane Ridgeway.
