I suppose you think Braith is a great 5/8 and inspirational skipper who leads by example as well

Sammy P is a high quality human being and a great club man, but he is one of the slowest wingers in the competition, is abyssmal in defence, is scary under the high ball and is not a noted try scorer. He is still prone to unforced rookie mistakes after well over 120 first grade games, so I don't think he is going to get better.

As I said in my original post he will be there come Round 1, but I just think he is not that great and would like to see someone else given a shot.

Just because I have an opinion that differs from yours doesn't mean I don't have a clue........

Training mishaps & trial games will play a part in who will be in the side for Rd 1.

J Carney in the centres, thats interesting.
                  More like that's desperate!

What you say is true but...he makes valuable ground from dummy half, always plays the ball very quickly and puts us on the front foot.

                      This.

And please let the news about MK be wrong and he hasn't had an injury setback!

You are entitled to your opinion, but I reckon this is one of the harshest and most unjustifiable positions on Sammy I've seen on here.

He is not one of the slowest wingers in the competition. This is a myth. I don't know why people think he is so slow, perhaps it is because of our impotent years in '08 (tries off kicks) and '09. He is actually pretty quick. His acceleration is very good. Watch the highlights of our late comeback against Manly in 2010 to see him burn Matai and hold off cover. He isn't slow.

Abysmal in defence? He isn't Nathan Hindmarsh, but we've had far worse defensive wingers in the past few years, both under the high ball and in terms of reading the play: Waqa, Tuigamala, even Leilua etc.

He is easily our best option under the high ball in attack - he's the only one who can jump. Scored a great try against Souffs in Round 1 2010 (or 2011, not sure) leaping above his opposite.

I'm not gonna tell you you "don't have a clue," but I reckon you're being way too harsh on Sammy P.

He is no Greg Inglis, so we shouldn't expect him to be one. Manly won premierships with guys like Michael Robertson. There is a place in our team for Perrett.

I have to agree with you BlindFreddy. I am a big fan of Sammy and I will be happy for him to be in our round 1 team. I always thought he was very safe under the high ball (did a terrific job at fb in mini's absence a few years back) and i think he has enough speed to cut it out on the wing. Some of his defensive reads early in his career infuriated me, but i think he has developed into a solid defensive winger... not brilliant but solid.

                            Blind Freddy,

Thanks for the well thought out reply, it is always good to get other peoples opinions.

Don't get me wrong as long as Sammy P is wearing the RWB and I will always cheer for him and support him as like I said previously he is a really great guy and sets a great example for the young guys in the team, and he does make valuable metres from dummy half.

I just obviously see things different to Coach Smithy and I guess that is why he is the coach and I am a footy fan and I am more than happy to eat humble pie each and every time Sammy does something great for the Roosters.

                            Cheers

                            Steve

                            PS GO ROOSTERS!!!

I'm also a fan of Sammy at the back. So much so that I'd be starting him there ahead of Minichiello this year. But I'm not Smithy...

Haha we can agree there mate, as long as he's doing good things for the Chooks we're all happy.

I was surprised but pleased to see Guerra's selection in the second row for our first game this year. I thought he was our standout forward for 2011 and hope his contract will be extended . There must be rival clubs keeping a close eye on him.
