St George Illawarra will not appoint Craig Fitzgibbon as their next coach after the Roosters assistant snubbed a return to his former club.

Fitzgibbon was been considered the frontrunner for the Dragons role ever since the club announced it had parted ways with Paul McGregor earlier this month.

While Fitzgibbon was happy to speak to the Dragons, he has decided to remain loyal to the Roosters and won't be on the lookout for a job until at least the end of next season such is his loyalty to Nick Politis and Trent Robinson.

I suppose another opportunity will arise but he will need to choose carefully though - I cant imagine Dean Pay/Steve Kearney/ Mary McGregor/ Anthony Siebold getting another NRL head coach role - assistant at best- How long is Robbo signed up for though- His wife has been hinting about returning to France I hear

Calling it now, fitzy has been told he is the successor to Robbo and will eventually coach Easts... that’s why he will never leave.. he is currently doing an apprenticeship under Robbo and will take over when he is ready... Easts since 2013 have always planned 5 steps ahead and this is no different.

I love Fitzy. Blokes like him and Maubs epitomise the Roosters Way.

He is a top bloke, our Fitzy, all power to him. He will become an excellent coach for us in due course, after serving his apprenticeship under one of the best operators of modern times. He is simply biding his time - he knows what he is doing, and so does the club.

Some people believe supporting the Roosters
is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed
with that attitude. I can assure you it is
much, much more important than that.

Robbo is 43 and could be here another 20 years. Unless Robbo has secretly told Fitzy of his intention to leave within a few years, I doubt Fitzy is waiting around for the top job.

people assume that every assistant coach wants a top job. nothing wrong with staying in a job where you're well enough paid and you're happy.

people might think less of fitzy if he doesn't test himself but i wouldn't. if he wants to have a top job then he'll get one but i hope he doesn't chase a top job cos that's what people think he should do.

If you’re happy in your job and getting paid well for it and don’t want the extra load of responsibility and headaches, then why chase a head coach job? Some people are just happy doing what they’re doing. I remember Sterling being considered for a head coach position many many years ago, and he said that it’s not worth the headache it brings .

Just my opinion but If I were Fitzy and did want a first grade gig, I’d jump at the chance to coach the Merge (as much as I hate them cun7s). He has a connection with the club and they have some great juniors coming through the Illawarra region here. What other club would he be waiting for besides our own?

Why not become the modern day Ron Massey?
You could do a lot worse than be an assistant to Trent Robinson.
                              ..it’ll be interesting to see
