I'm sure that you're right Tets. in the early seventies there was a shooting in William St. down the road from the United Services (now the Paddington Inn and unrecognisable as the pub of yesteryear. Word had got out that some in the side had bet against them winning that day's Grand Final. Most of the guys, a few out of Juvie or going in, were good but there was quite a lot of violence too. In one infamous incident at Waverley oval, Ray Richards, a local identity and former pug (not that Ray Richards) knocked out the ref who had sent him off and one of the linesmen who admonished him on the way to the sheds. Life ban. Dead now. There were two brothers associated with the Club who were later hit men.
I know not of what you speak as I was years earlier but, yeah, they were a different breed.
I was amazed to see ol' Ray Richards at the French Film Festival at the Dendy a few years back and even more amazed to hear him discuss the movie's themes. But he hated the idea of a Republic - a wog conspiracy he thought it. Old school.

I read Bomber Peard by the man himself. He and Johnny Mayes were Bondi United and they used to hate playing Paddo Colts because of one man they all dreaded....Bunny Reilly. Not only did he hit like a truck in defense, he was good with the knuckle too. Son of a wharfie who lived in Paddington. Not like the Paddo of today which is full of tofu munching Paddington Buddhists these days.
Peard recounts how he and Mayes were so glad when they went to Easts because now they were playing with Bunny not against.Last edited by Bruce Pickett; 09-19-2020, 05:48 PM.

Originally posted by Paddo Colt 61 View PostHeadless Chook has posted a Foxsports piece on The Bandanna as though it is the last word and some here have piled on. The piece could be seen as denigration of a commercial rival but it's not that, it is simply another shot in the culture wars that Murdoch wages internationally. It's often the "look over there" diversion away from more serious issues but in this case it's part of a ongoing campaign to disparage progressive influencers.
Let's look closely at what was said (it could be Year 12 Language exercise - remember when you were shown how language could be misused but, later, decided to read The Tele anyway?)
First comes the ridicule - "bandanna man Peter Fitzsimons" and "Pirate Pete". Then the article goes on to link him to the failures of Rugby even though his article made no reference at all to the rival game. The main purpose, of course, is to smear him and his judgement about anything. "Shouting into an empty elevator shaft" uses a catchy metaphor to insist that nobody is interested - but they are, interested enough to write a column about him as it turns out.
Loaded phrases like "wants to lecture" and "has taken it upon himself to tell..." when he's done nothing but write an opinion from which people can take what they will. My take is that News Corps "investment" in Rugby League can do without headlines about player concussion issues.
Finally the breathtaking hypocrisy of "Rather than leaving it to the numerous medical experts and doctors" - here we have the sober, responsible bullshit Murdoch pose but anyone with even a passing interest in the pandemic knows that Newscorp is leading the charge against "Chairman Dan" and the other States which have mandated border closures on the advice of "numerous medical experts and independent doctors". Fox is also the enabler of the Trumpster and the anti masker Libertarian movement in the failed State.
To those who have piled on, I urge you to be more circumspect when exposed to anything associated with the Murdoch media. It, to a huge extent, sold WMDs to a gullible populace, sold 9/11 to an Australian audience which appears to think it was a singular catastrophe without giving any thought to the US responsibility for carnage in the Middle East or even TWO Atom Bombs on defenceless cities.
News is now ramping up a bullshit China-phobia campaign in Australia and that has a connection to The Bandanna. The idea is to ridicule and denigrate anyone who is reasoned and progressive and has a platform so that their opinions might be summarily dismissed by the ordinary Joe and Jolene in favour of Newscorp group think.
They are so smart. Play such a long game.
This has been decades in action.
Now so many of our "intellectuals" have been brainwashed by socialist bullshit and have swung so far left they are in the edge of a cliff.
The leaders of tomorrow.
Good luck to us.

For gawd's sake spare me the paranoia. Reds under the bed is it? Best, Johnny, to confine your concerns to your wages, people are being ripped off all over the shop.
Dire warnings here but not not an atom of evidence for anything. Surveys say that the Tele has the lowest of credibility ratings and the ABC the highest but comments on this thread make me wonder

The only credibility the ABC has now days is with kids shows. Its news services (apart from some country based shows) are just as bad as any of the commercial news and are viewed as by those except the blinkered left.
Hey but anything is great if it just keeps justifying your point of view.,
On the effect of Chine, JT is not far off the money, look at the universities and the influences they have with some. They have also bought several old pollies including Rudd and Carr.
There has been a lot of funding of the poor pacific nations which has nothing to do being good naturedThe Internet is a place for posting silly things
