  • Centre field bomb for winger

I noticed that Newcastle used a play on Friday night that could prove very effective for Toops.

In it, Edrick Lee looped around the backfield and contested bombs aimed at the fullback standing in centre field. He tried in the last play of the first half but ran into traffic, but got one just before full time and would have scored had it not been for a brilliant defensive play from Manu.

Isolating small fullbacks like Papenhuyzen in bombs and sending Toops in pursuit in the centre field is worth considering.

Just like the Steave Gearin try in the 1980 GF?

That and the Sattler tackle always gets replayed ad nauseaum when it comes to greatest GF highlights.

    Gives me the shiites.

    Payback on Penrith this year.

Not sure its a tactic I would like the Chooks to use - seems a desperate move and if the opposition get the ball your under the pump defensively - in talking about bombs teams go wide what about the old fashion Bomber Peardy bomb from the 70's-in the in goal near the posts

I know he wasn't on the other night but I honestly believe the only thing that stands between us and another title is Cleary's kicking game.

I must admit I didn't notice it during the game but it could have its merits. Turbo Tom is so effective chasing bombs in the middle of the field because of his height.
Toops will be up against To'o from Penrith if we face them and will definitely have a big advantage or Vunivalu from the storm if we face them in the finals.
I think another potential mismatch for us is kicking for Manu over Olam who is vertically challenged when we play them.

I reckon Toups outjumps Vinavalu , and Teddy outjumps Pappy, so we have the Storm beaten in the air, in attack.
Two weeks ago Seibold and the Broncs peppered Toups with Bombs , and it didn't work.
This week Obrien and Pearce got it right on their second try. Not a full height bomb to our left winger, but a shallower kick aimed at the centres.
Something we'll need to counter in the weeks ahead.

Nothing a bit of kick pressure can't fix. Gotta stop them from getting on the front foot which will also limit his kicking game.

I personally don't miss Pearce's mid field bombs, it may of worked against us a few times but does everyone not remember the period where this was our ONLY last option play with many frustrating results.

                Nathan Gardner?

Yup.. definitely not a tactic I miss.

For a while there I thought it might have been a Robbo tactic... until we let Mitch Pearceoff and then I realised it was a Pearce tactic..

And gee I don't miss him in the slightest.. not a big game player.. Not a half who has the potential to dominate or close out games.

Agree it is probably a tactic worth considering.
                      MRR or Rabid

Some people believe supporting the Roosters
is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed
with that attitude. I can assure you it is
much, much more important than that.

I wasn’t suggesting a return to the indiscriminate Pearce up and under - rather, looking for opportunities to isolate the fullback in midfield and sending Toops in from the wing.

Story of his life isn't it.
