  • Hia

If a player fails the HIA what tests do they need to pass afterwards to be able to play in the next game - is the shorter turnaround a contributing factor in ruling a player out no matter if they pass these tests.

In my view any player that fails a HIA should be stood down from the next game - second one 2 games and so on - Any player who undergoes a HIA a number of times to be determined should also be stood down. Clubs/NRL are leaving themselves open to legal action later on down the track noting that former Chook John Higgins is currently taking legal action against the club.

I Remember him (Higgins) playing under 23's / some reserve grade and a couple of 1st grade games and recall him wearing head gear at times? - played at the same time as Roosters legend Spiro Strattos i recall :-)

every concussion is different. every player that suffers from a concussion is different to the next.

They have a test which is done in a calm neutral environment which the player is asked a series of questions. These are timed and recorded. After there has been a concussion they are then to repeat the same test and the times are recorded. If all the times are the same he is nearly ok. There are also balance tests and all sorts. some times mri are required.

medical opinion is that people recovery from concussions 7 to 10 days after the event although there is a higher risk of additional concussions as a result and some may suffer the affects of concussion weeks and months afterwards. repeated concussion could have a lasting affect especially later in life.

Sure the Chooks and others rest players who have suffered severe and multiple concussions but if a player fails a HIA passes the protocols test during the week and plays and suffers another Concussion and fails the HIA biut passes the protocols test during the week the second time - do they play the next game?

I like and respect the fact that our club seems to take a conservative and prudent stance when it comes to these sorts of matters. I don't have a specific view. I trust that, unlike in the old days, the experts and medical knowledge which is available these days will be fully and appropriately consulted.

Some people believe supporting the Roosters
is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed
with that attitude. I can assure you it is
much, much more important than that.

The recommended medical opinion is that recovery from concussion can occur over varying time frames and its recommended that at least a 7 day return to play protocol is followed. This protocol has many steps and each much be passed before progressing so the return to play process can take more than 7 days.
Full recovery from a concussion does not necessarily related to increased likelihood of repeated concussion. Although prior to recovery the risk is higher.
There is a big tie in of technique as in players often suffer due to their technique and they are very likely to suffer more.

Older players that are now suffering as a result of multiple concussions are as a result of playing without recovering.

The testing process is not trivial and is (as someone else mentioned) compared to a baseline test.

The Roosters process is better than most and it can be seen in the case of Cordner who was not concussed against the Knights and it was other factors relating to welfare that kept himself off the field
