  • According to Fox Sports, via SMH, reporting the he's signed with us from 2022 on a 3 yr deal. With Angus maybe leaving. And that souffs won't release him earlier ( for 2021). ..

The salary cap player jigsaw puzzle getting complicated. So much for the "sombrero" bullshit. Probably depends on how the Boyd concussion scenario plays out, and how we can keep those that we want/need to keep under the cap.

    • No way Angus leaves. Jake Friend will likely retire or be moved on at the end of 2021 which will free up loads of cash. Cords is in precarious territory, too - doubling the importance of re-signing Gus.

He's one of the best young forwards in the game and there's no way we are stupid enough to not offer Angus what he deserves.

Friend's only 30 and he's in great form? I reckon Origin'a brought him to a whole new level. Nick/Robbo love his leadership style too.

But yeah... I still reckon Gus is staying.

My concern for Jake is rhe same as Boyd - he's copped a lot of head knocks recently, including another one in Origin I.

He might be 30 but his body has taken a hammering over the years. He almost died playing for this club at one stage.

So it wouldn't surprise me if he's done at 31; which once upon a time wasn't uncommon. The rise of Verrills and Lussick will only add more heat to the transition decision.

Fair point about that (lung?) injury + the (sepsis?)

That said, he's recovered from both and IMO found career best form in Origin 1. I reckon Jake's gonna play on for another 4-5 years and he's gonna play really well during that time.

That said if he doesn't, he'll have 3 hard earned premierships to his name, Australian/QLD caps and a reputation as one of the toughest Roosters out there.

IMO Cords and Jake have copped the full force of the fact we always have to earn our wins (refs never help us). They've both learned to just get on with the job and our culture has been REALLY tightlipped. Cords/Friend are mentally the 2 toughest players in the game IMO. They shoulder every bit of BS we cop (both from within the club such as personality clashes and from sources such as bad reffing calls). All this must take its toll. If both chose to retire, I wouldn't see that as being a weak move.

            • I think Angus should be safe..I mean The Morris twins and Jake will be done next year .......unless we have something else cooking. .........But at the time I feel we paid overs for Angus..he has now become a very good solid reliable player but he is no game breaker .

Have another look at the 2019 GF qualifier. He was crucial in that win.

IMO that's kinda what you want in a ~$500k a year back rower though? Consistently good defence and a few solid edge runs at the right moment. Forwards aren't usually all that glamorous... IMO you notice them when they're not there rather than when they're there. IMO when Crichton's out, we leak far more metres down the middle, which means we're starting every set 15-20m+ further back than we need to.

are you saying we are only gonna offer him 500k for his next contract? He signed for over 700k originally, Unless Trent can’t find him a starting spot which he hasn’t seemed to this year, then 500k is more than enough for a bench player.

One great game doesn't constitute career best form. The problem for Jake is the wear and tear on his body. He has spent a lot of time on the sidelines in the past couple years and I can only see that continuing if he keeps playing.

                      • If Frizell is getting 750k a season from Newcastle then Angus could get 700k to 800k a year from any club. The Chooks can’t just say here is 500k a year to play for us. Canterbury or the Tigers would pay him 850k a year if they could get him but according to Kelvin Johnson he is gone.

No chance in hell is jake playing “ career best footy “. The best I’ve ever seen friend play for a prolonged period of time was 2016, he did play very well in the first game and well the second game he wasn’t on.

Jake has definitely had ups and downs in terms of form throughout his career. He has been pretty good for the last few years imo.

Yeah no I agree he’s been good for us but he isn’t near the best he has been that’s my point, at the same time I feel like I attack nug heaps on here but he will always be a true champion for our club friendy

                              • Back on topic - I was with a mate who knows roger fabri (the speed coach who’s been working with JS) and he deadset believes the hype around JS apparently rog has worked with many 17 year olds in the past from all over the country and Joseph is the most gifted he’s seen by far.. He was iffy at first before working with him but after a few sessions he has been left amazed. Almost EVERY person who has seen this kid either play or train has given huge wraps on him, incredible.
