I honestly don't know enough about Kings to comment but just in general I think attending a private school would have been good. I remember as an 18 year old just thinking that the kids I met who had seemed to be much more experienced in the world than I was at the time. I'm not crying about it though.
There's always that sort of thinking when you are younger but looking later in life, whos more worldly wise now?

Well I caught up I guess. I was a pretty wild teenager. I think I would have benefited from being disciplined and shown a better path.

One thing that struck me when I left and went to uni is that at Scots they push you along. At Uni they didn’t care if you kept up or not. I hit the skids without the structure big time in the first year out.
Yep nobody cares what you choose to do at uni. You either do your work or you don't.

What are the main issues these days? The price would have to be an issue for many.

But the people I went to school with at one school are some of the best people Ive met because of the experience we endured.
I came from the other side of the railroad track like LLB but I had a good mate who went to Kings, was a top knockabout bloke and he drove around in his Dad's Holden Gemini even though his Dad could have easily afforded a Porsche.......

+1 - I went down the IT path instead but studied Economics at UOW and had an enjoyable 3 years.

Once agian enjoy KBs insightful posts but on this occasion i dont tale too much from it. Having met his family a few times when he attended Regentville public they were always super nice
A blast from the past “ Regentville Public” 2 of my siblings went there in the mid 70s, I didn’t as we migrated here I was high school age and went to Nepean High at Emu Plains. Wish society is same now as it was back then, I enjoyed the cricket games in the middle of the street with all the neighbours, and riding our bikes ( no helmet) down to the creek or river etc etc .....

Werent those the days mate. I still remember riding EVERYWHERE on my bike. Best times were heading down to the big concrete streams that were mainly put in place to handle floodwater. We would run along as fast as we could to see how far we could slide along that slippery mossy little centre bit.

Sounds gross but we never got sick and it was safer than going to Mount Druitt Water Works to get sliced up by razors on the slides.

Some Economic units - Did an undergrad in commerce - law and accounting.

Completed post grad Degrees through what is now UNE - used to have residential schools back then - went back about 10 years ago and did a MBA through UNE which was all online- 1 day optional course overview in Sydney

I rate UNE pretty highly for course content and availability of Unit Coordinators as most were elsewhere in Australia - the only issue i had was one graduation when Tony Windsor was the guest speaker - really hot day and he talked talked and talked -didn't think he would ever finish- a few of the graduates collapsed so i think that's why he finally stopped talking.

                  • I doubt Joseph’s parents paid for his tuition at Kings. I’m sure it appealed being the closest GPS school to Penrith.
                    ..it’ll be interesting to see

So true, the scratches and scrapes on your knees and elbows were badges of honour back then.

Good stuff. I went into banking and then public service but never really used my Economics degree. I went to ANU which is how I ended up in Canberra after growing up in a small NSW country town. Moving from the bush to the big city - yeah Canberra wasn’t that big then but it was to me - was a big change. My son wants to go into computing / IT.

You’ve done very well Salvo. I did a BEc and BA. As I said in the post above, it’s how I ended up in Canberra.

The razors were an urban myth!

When i left school in year 10 i did an apprenticeship at the railways - Boilermaker/ welder - finished it and become a tradie then the big restructure of the railways - anyway LIFO happened .

Our Union AMWSU (Amalgamated Metal workers and shipwrights union) negotiated a redundancy package where we could do a course of our choice and receive our usual pay for 1 year plus a job back in the Public service - I completed an office skills certificate course and got a job in TAFE as a clerical assistant first off at TAFE HO which was in Castlereagh street back then.

We were helped in a major way because Bob Hawke then ACTU president told us all at a meeting that none of us would lose our jobs so i think the General Secretary of the AMWSU must have pulled in some big favours to get this type of package - John HalfPenny was the GS - Ian Carmichael / George Campbell and Doug Cameron were officials

I was in TAFE as i said and now DoE ( NSW Department of Education Finance and Legal) did a few years on secondment at our Union -PSA (Public Service Association) as an Organiser which was good but some of the muppet mandarins still held it against me when it came to higher promotions (currently a 9/10 clerk)- that's the way it goes i suppose
