Could be wrong but I reckon Robbo looks for ball running and passing skills above all in a half. He wants somebody who will ALWAYS make the right decision when passing and have the cojones to take on the line at speed.

All I can think is that it's a little bit like why no professional coach would take me on as a 100m sprinter (only 400's). They'd take one look at my style and say 'you've clearly put a lot of work into that haven't you, my boy... yeah... I can't squeeze any more 100m speed out of you I'm afraid'. Something about neuromuscular pathways. You've either got one of those super quick brains or you don't.

Robbo will pick incomplete halves like Watson and Lam ahead of guys like Hastings/Pearce/Flanno who have fuller games because they react quicker. I reckon he figures that you either have that super fast twitch about you as a half or you don't. If you don't then you can probably improve a lot through practice and have a great career but you simply won't be able to keep up with his expectations. Watson, Lam and Walker are all instinctive halves who will see a tiny hole and turn it into an opportunity. I figure that if you're gonna have a teeny tiny dude on the field then he MUST be able to do that. Every generation has 1 or 2 kids who are capable...
    Good point.

Cronk wasn't a ball runner and Robbo did persist with Pearce for 5 seasons......

I liked Flanno & think he will develop into a very good organising halfback. For some reason the Chooks weren’t prepared to wait for his development. Sam Walker must be bloody good.

so lachie lam is our 7 round 1 next year but you'd figure we're not relying on sam w to play too much first grade - maybe only give him a game here and there unless he shines above what we can reasonably expect of an 18 year old. does that mean we're looking at sammy v to fill in at 7 if someone goes down? that could kill 2 birds with one stone.

You probably weren't neurotic enough to be a sprinter. Distance running is about the gut, sprinting is about nerves.

Anyone else thought that Flanagan was not only bought because he was a decent half, but also because if we got him over, Xerri would follow due to them being best mates.

I just wonder if the fact Xerri got done for drugs had a bearing on us releasing Flanagan. As we were no longer interested in Xerri.

                          Yes..I know...its the off season.

It may well be the case that Lam is extremely dedicated at improving himself, whereas Flanno feels as if he has the fundamentals of being a good half down already.
It may well be the case that Lam enthusiastically listens and takes on board the coaches tough love, whereas Flanno might feel the tough love is a harsh critique or a personal attack.

They have different skillsets, but i've seen nothing to indicate Lam is a better half than Flanno.

So i think it boils down the attitude.

Robbo probably sees Lam as a player they can develop into a champion, but not Flanno. For whatever reason. Either way, i don't think it's a 'talent' decision so to speak.

haha, seems unlikely but like steakface said it's not just a talent decision.

Good point, yeah maybe. Flano's biggest problem was his father, that chip on his shoulder doesn't help anyone.
