His axing after Origin I last year did not generate the same amount of headlines as dumped duo Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker, but Crichton, like Walker, worked hard to win his place back in Brad Fittler's side.

Crichton was excellent for a lot of this year for the Roosters and is desperate to earn a contract extension beyond next season.

Wendell Sailor told Triple M on Saturday that Rugby Australia should make a serious play to lure the schoolboy rugby star back to their code.

But Crichton said there was much more for him to achieve at the Roosters - and the Blues.

"I'm stoked to be back in this arena and playing with guys of this calibre and coaches of this calibre,'' Crichton said. "It's nothing short of an honour.

"I was down on confidence before Origin I [last year]. I knew I wasn't playing my best footy from the get-go. I was coming off shoulder surgery, there was the change of clubs [Souths to Easts], change of scene, trying to fit into a group and adding my bit to an already great team at the Roosters was tough.

"I learnt a lot about myself and the player I wanted to be. I'm lucky our captain Boyd Cordner is in my position and a great example of what a Roosters' back-rower needs to be and how a representative back-rower needs to be.

"There was a time there I had to work hard, double down and get better.''

Crichton was shifted to the centre for the World Club Challenge and spent time at lock and even a brief stint in the front row this year.

It was not lost on Fittler that Crichton had shown his versatility and he was one of the Roosters' best in the final few weeks before they bombed out of the title race. Plenty of his brutal shots in defence featured on the highlights reel.

Crichton, 24, said he felt he was getting back to his best, ''but I know there's more to get better at''.

Weighing a healthy 105kg, Crichton will do plenty of damage off the bench against Queensland on Wednesday night as a middle or on an edge.

As for 2022 and beyond, Crichton, who was targeted by the Waratahs before his last contract, said: "I love the Roosters and I don't want to leave. I love the club, the coaches, the style we play, the area, all my mates go for the club. My plan is to hang around. There's a lot more I want to do and want to prove.''

The Roosters look set to this week sign another schoolboy rugby prodigy, Joseph Suaalii. Crichton, who attended Scots College, said the 17-year-old would be in good hands at the Chooks.
Fkn oath. If this doesn't bring a smile to your lads' face I don't know what will. Gus slowly turning into my favourite player, hope we can get a deal sorted ASAP.

      ICAC?

I think you’re jumping to conclusions suggesting that he is being given a place in the side on a platter. I have no doubts that the values & expectations Robbo holds his player to would mean he would have to earn his position. You’re underselling Trent Robinson with comments like that.

At this point no I wouldn’t. I think Radley, Verrills, Gus & Collins are potential all 10 yr+ players for us and are an important part of ensuring the inevitable retirements of JWH, Cordner, Liu & SST over the next 3-5 years have minimal impact on the standards & leadership of the forward pack. However I do think we need to redistribute some of our salary cap into the 3/4 line to prepare for a very different looking 3/4 line in 2022.

I feel like there is going to have to be one tough decision made that not everyone is going to be happy with or agree with. We have seen this in the past with Robinson when he has had to move on players such as James Maloney, Michael Jennings, Dylan Napa & most recently Latrell Mitchell for the balance of the squad.

I’m not going to pretend I’m in a position to have a valid opinion on that call because I’ve got no idea what sort of salaries players are sitting on but I have faith in Robbo and the club because in hindsight most of those calls seem to have been the correct ones.

Think you may have misread or I miss typed , the money he is being offered is wrong. I know he will have to earn his position but to get more dollars than established players is rubbish . No matter what expectations of his potential Robbo may have . Start at the bottom and earn your way to the top though hard work . Then the rewards come .Would rather he not come at the expense of team harmony and of course it will cause team disharmony , it can't not

Do you really think this is what always happens in the workplace ? There are exceptions Not saying your opinion is wrong here but the logic of everybody starting at the bottom and earning there way up imo is flawed

If you're not willing to pay for potential you're already 10 steps behind the best in the competition.

I appreciate where you're coming from but the unwritten rules of sport changed a long time ago.

Joey Manu, Boyd Corner, Jake Friend, Nat Butcher, JWH all big players we had to go out and poach by paying a premium for their potential.

Sam Walker and Suaali are no different. If we don't pay them someone else will. Just be glad they are chasing our club because we offer something a lot of others don't.

I reckon the Chooks would be offering him University tuition in his contract plus a place to live & a car. So he might only be on 400k a year.

Its a risk as if the potential is not fulfilled which happens quite a bit you may loose players who go onto to have stellar careers with other teams if they are forced to leave if too much of the cap is spent on potential.

Would the players you mentioned be signed for big money though? - only JWH had played NRL of that group of players listed, The Broncos used to sign stacks of young players with "potential" on scholarships with the hope some might fulfill this potential- Not sure if they still do this though?

                      • Unfortunately, Angus won't be with the Roosters in 2022 even if he takes a pay cut. Only chance is if Cordner retires.
