Thought I’d rehash this thread regarding conversions and penalty kicks.

3 from 7 from Sam and Keighran. Whilst not blaming Sam in any way cause the kid is punching way above his weight, and is Keighran there for a part time gig? Missed one and just got another and then off... At one stage when Manu scored that try that was later disallowed, before it was, I recall seeing SST going to collect the ball much like he was going to take the conversion...it didn’t matter cause it was disallowed BUT not having a reliable kicker for every round will be more costly than having players unavailable cause we can work around the missing players but can’t plan for squandering points when some should be converted. We are currently kicking at 64%... Not enough to win the close games. This brings back memories when we let Maloney go and conversions were hard to come by.

walker got 2 from 5, 1 hard one from 4, but he wasn't far off. i thought he actually showed promise and he seems a quick learner. if he kicks well at training i'd give him the gig. i reckon give it a couple of months and he'll be banging them over from the sideline more often than not

Yep, may as well stick with him.

If I recall Lattrell was regarded as a unreliable early in his first grade kicking duties, but within 2-3 months became quite good. It’s just a matter of kicking continuously and Walker will develop the consistency required.

Yep I reckon technique plays out too. My guess is that you learn to curve it in so that you have a higher chance of nailing the more difficult kicks. However, this potentially reduces your accuracy in the short-term as you start over-complicating the medium-difficulty kicks.

As an ex-400m sprinter, I'm sorta interested in what the breeze is like in footy stadiums. Some were a bugger to run in because the swirling breeze (Stadium Australia's classic for this... I know it was only a temp running stadium but the Olympic Trials were tough for 400m runners as there was no headwind or tail wind, just sideways annoyance all around).

I s*ck at kicking but could imagine that some round, aerodynamic-looking stadiums require a lot of curving, even for simple kicks. Whereas with park footy you can get away with just bashing it forward (SST style).

If we need to rely on goal kicking to win games than let's just worry about 2022

I kind of want one player to own the role but we never seem to have the same players on the park for long enough. I think I would leave it to Walker as he can develop into a career goal kicker.

Precisely....lets focus more on stopping a few tries.

No not at all. 6-10 points or even 2 could be a premiership.

I'm surprised SST's average is high. Maybe he just doesn't look confident when he kicks, or maybe his kicks are too intermittent. Walker & Keighran both seemed sharper shooters when they were on song, but last weekend was not great, or course. Those who dismiss the importance of having a good goal-kicker also surprise me. Sure, if you score enough tries you will win, but points are points and goal-kicking is often the difference between winning or losing, and that can mean the difference between being in the top four or not, between winning the minor premiership or not, and winning the premiership or not. Last year's Grand Final for one, was decided by three penalty goals.

If I remember correctly, in the early rounds last year there were a few on here saying that Flanagan wasn't a strong enough goal kicker and yet going into the last round was leading point scorer. I think Sam is our best long term prospect so we should be sticking with him regardless of if SST or Keighran are on the field.

We have to go with Keighan, Walker, Manu and Teddy going forward, with Verrils at 14?
