I dunno why we need this thread or why a few obnoxious proponents keep feeding the fire. It's boring and obnoxious.

The Bible names lots of things as abominations ... like eating shellfish for example. Why do we not see religious groups picketing seafood restaurants or posting on social media about the evils of eating Lobster? If it where wholly and solely about the Bible naming homosexuality an abomination, then surely all the other abominations named in the Bible should get equal billing? I can only conclude there is something else to it, beyond the condemnation of the religious texts.
Religious folk are, in the main hypocrites, and that's what gives me the shits. They cherry-pick what bits they want to believe and what they want to ignore. Folau has tattoo's, wears clothing of mixed fabrics, shaves his beard and cuts his hair, and of course, works on Sundays. These are all forbidden by the same Bible that he quotes when condemning gays, adulterers and thieves.
Lastly, he is not being excluded because of his faith. Many of the Islanders in the NRL are strongly religious, and no-one has a problem with that. He got into trouble because he used his position and profile to publicly criticize a minority who already have tremendous problems with social acceptance, and this is potentially harmful. He quite possible also broke anti-discrimination laws in the process, and went back on his word to not post such garbage after he was called out on it the first time. Hypocrisy.
I do have issues with certain aspects of it because it does exactly what the people you are critical of do. I am pretty sure that in the bible with respect to what you can eat, what you can shave or cut etc is never described as an abominations. So you are grabbing parts of the book and misquoting them and exaggerating them to illustrate a point you want to make better. I agree with your point I just don’t think you are being totally accurate to the quoting of the book- maybe I am wrong.
From what I remember the wording around what you can’t eat is mainly all Old Testament and is only as strong as “ you shall not eat” or you will detest that flesh etc / it’s not an abomination as you describe it to eat it. As I remember there are many other parts of the bible - I think mainly but not only New Testament that explicitly say do not judge a man on what he eats - there by really saying it doesn’t matter - not an abomination - other parts say judge a man not by what goes into his mouth but by what comes out of it.
So you are dead right - many problems with religion come from fanatics or not necessarily fanatics just religious groups picking and choosing the bits that suit them and then misrepresenting the general message to suit their agenda. But you have really done the same thing in making your point. I don’t disagree with your agenda - I like your thoughts but it’s a slippery slope when you start misrepresenting the words or only representing part of them.
Not trying to have a crack at you Waylander I agree with your overbidding message - but just found certain parts of it very interesting from the perspective of you being a little hypocritical with how you presented it - probably completely unintentionally.
The bible is a collection of stories by many different authors of a wide range of years - and rewritten many different time over thousands of years - in itself as a result contradicts its self often.
I personally think it’s all fiction but not written with harmful intent but good intentions - the Bible the Koran the Torah etc in my humble option all having confusing messaging if you get into the habit of focussing g on minute points - but all in my opinion have the overwhelming overriding message of be good to your fellow man. Don’t get lost in the detail people.Last edited by The Lip; 02-13-2021, 07:59 AM.

I often tell people I live by my own simple religion:
When you get out of bed in the morning, be grateful that you can put both feet on the ground
Be kind to yourself and in turn be kind to everyone you see, speak with and interact with.
Use your manners - please and thank you go a long way
Smile
Don't judge others as everyone has their own path in life to follow
and most importantly:
Follow the ESDRLFC
not hard at all really
Happy Valentine's Day to all, regardless of whom you chose to love in this lifetime.

If we really wanna discuss religion, the biggest messages are:
- We are all sinners
- Love each other as equals
- Don't judge people, leave that to God
- Don't be a hypocrite who boasts about being all pious then behaves like a d!ckhead (e.g. by judging people)
It disappoints me to see religion being used in this way. You won't see the Pope or Archbishop of Canterbury saying they know who's going to hell.
IMO it's unproductive of Israel (who has no religious training) to constantly misquote the bible, pass judgment on humans, go on angry rants (which have been filmed + published) and then take a weird turn whereby he's criticising a bunch of mainstream human rights campaigns because they also stand up for gay people.
There's religion... and then there's twisted personal opinions that get tied in with 'religion'. IMO mainstream Christians shouldn't have to be tied in with uneducated radicals who are sharing their personal opinions. The message of the bible has never been for humans to judge people and feel superior because they believe in God. The Pope has openly said that God loves gay people and that he welcomes them to his kingdom.
If people wanna learn about God then I encourage them to enter their local Anglican/Catholic/Uniting...etc church rather than some Pentecostal home-study group and/or 'church' that looks more like a cafe/theatre. Heck go one step further, ask the priest/minister/pastor what sorta training they've had. Why should you trust what somebody from the sporting world thinks (e.g. Izzy or Margaret Court) over somebody who's ordained and has been through formal religious training from a reputable institution (including learning the historic/cultural context rather than doing a Google, cherry-picking quotes and then using them as the basis of a discriminatory rant that groups who are already marginalised will find offensive).Last edited by ism22; 02-14-2021, 11:06 AM.
