I remember the page 3 women in the one of the arvo papers - in a bikini but not topless i recall -some one would cut it out of the paper and bring it to school so we could all have a gawk at the picture

Also after School we would go down to the Newsagent when the new Playboy/Penthouse would come out (monthly i think). We would take turns in distracting the person at the counter as they sold lollies/ice creams and what not.

Someone would take a paper/rugby league week and go to where these magazines were (Usually at the back of the store) - put these in the middle and make it look like were were reading the paper /RLW instead of looking at the Pics of the Women models. The Newsagent must have known what was going on though

I used to take the notes up to admin to be canned but wouldn't stay - go home and get Mum to sort it out as she was pretty good at that - lots of practice with older Brothers who were in trouble a lot more than me - tried to expel me many a time - my Mum would so okay then i will write a letter to the education department - oh no Mrs xxxx you don't have to do that your son just has to behave.

A mate of mine was canned 12 cuts on each hand in High School one time- he must have moved his hands or something as he was canned on the knuckles a few times which swelled up - at Home that night his Dad asked what happened to your knuckles so he told him.

A few days later in Math's class where the Teacher was this Math's Master and main caner his Dad appeared at the door wanting to speak to this Teacher - after class - No now as i have to leave for interstate ( his Dad was an interstate Truckie /stocky and proper handy with the fists/amateur boxer) - His Dad said you don't cane my son etc etc and grabbed his tie and with one punch knocked this teacher out and then lowered him to the ground and left.

Someone went up to the Admin office to get one of the Admin staff and by the time they arrived he had come around - nothing happened though which was strange - This Math's teacher had a huge collection of canes and enjoyed using them I recall.

Absolutely, I agree that there has to be a balance between an individual's moral culpability and his uncontrollable urges.

But we're talking about young people here though. 10 year olds, 15 year olds, that sort of thing. Kids growing up feeling like shit, believing they are immoral freaks and being bullied daily – often bashed – without having any control over the issue they're being bullied about. Those other issues (alchoholism, cigarettes, gambling) are not relevant in this context.

I'd say that once we eradicate the marginalisation of gay people to the point that queer kids feel safe and happy that we should then tackle the scourge that is denigrating that gravely marginalised group, gamblers and drinkers.

Id go the other way and have them educated earlier so they don't turn out to be alcoholics, drug users, gambling addicts, fornicators etc...

No i finished the Sunnyboy and that's what really set the teacher off - i never used to wait around for the cane and would hand in the note and then straight to the bike rack and peddle home= let Mum fix it you may be right that it was only 6 per hand- I finished year 10 only in 1978 so that's 1968 to 1978 all up- I still remember going to the Women's house near the School to watch the Moon Landing on TV - She gave us all types of sandwiches/ cakes and drinks - the Dish movie was on the other night.

I remember another incident i think it was the GF replay that last year of School for me -1978- Manly and Sharks - a kid in the class had a radio and was listening to it softy - the teacher caught him and took the radio off him and as the teacher was walking away the kid got up rushed at the teacher and crash tackled him from behind causing some broken bones for the teacher - strangely enough that kid didn't come back to our school.

The Music teacher allowed us to bring in records to play except when i brought mine in he wouldn't allow them to be played - Never Mind the Bollocks/ The Clash First record/ Ramones record and i think a Buzzcocks record or EP ?/ The Jam- Oh none of that - it was ABBA/Sherbert and bubble gum stuff like that.

Some of my older Brothers and Sisters would purchase English Music mags such as New Musical Express/Melody Maker so that's how i found about this new music they called "Punk Rock" - Old Mollie refused to play it on Countdown but he did interview Steve Jones and Paul Cook from the Sex Pistols though.

Interesting you say that. At one of my many canning sessions (3 on each hand btw) I pulled my hand away just as he took his swing and he followed through and whacked himself on the leg! The bastard gave me another 3 on both hands for it as well! Didn’t hurt anyway as I rubbed my hands down with soap before going in. Just left bruises but didn’t hurt.

Great memories mate. Wasn’t it awesome when People magazine came out. Because they weren’t viewed as hard core as the Playboys and Mayfairs, they weren’t in the sealed plastic wrapper so you could easily get a good gander in the store!

Have you watched the 6 part documentary 'Punk' on SBS on Demand Salvo? I'm about to start it some time this week. I still read the digital version of Mojo magazine from the UK through my library's website and also used to get Q Magazine which sadly folded last year after 34 years but I still have a collection of their great free CD's on my iPod now. My childhood neighbour who passed away at age 86 last year was one of those students who was physically forced to write with her right hand as a student even though she was left handed. I was one of the ones throwing up from the milk behind the bike sheds. I still can't stomach cold milk to this day.

No one is born gay, it is a taught or learnt behaviour.
