  • Robinson confirms Keary switch - 2021

Roosters coach Trent Robinson has confirmed Luke Keary will wear the No.7 jersey in 2021 and revealed it will be Lachie Lam who partners the star playmaker in the halves.

Lam has edged out Drew Hutchison and teen prodigy Sam Walker, son of former NRL half Ben, and the man tipped to become the Chooks’ long-term halfback.

“We’ve got four halves that are really pushing hard and training well. Luke Keary and Lachie Lam are our halves to start the season,” Robinson told Fox Sports’ Lara Pitt on Wednesday.

“Then we’ve got Drew Hutchison and Sam Walker sort of saying ‘I’m here and I’m ready’ as well. You always need a group of them. It’s like any sport, there has to be a group of players that are pushing hard, but we know where we’re going.”

Lam, son of Roosters great, Adrian has played 11 NRL games since making his top grade debut for the Tricolours in 2019.

Robinson showed his faith in the 22-year-old’s ability when he dropped Kyle Flanagan last season in favour of him — only for Lam to suffer an ankle injury a week later.

Much has been made of the Roosters’ halves combination ever since Flanagan was sensationally axed from the club after just his first full season in a highly scrutinised position.

However Robinson is confident in the direction the team is headed, including placing the No.7 on Keary’s back.

“Yep, definitely,” Robinson said when asked if Keary will shift to halfback.

Despite a change on the team sheet, Robinson says there won’t be much changing in Keary’s game. The 29-year-old was the chief playmaker last season — even in the No.6 jersey — and he’ll play that same role again.

“It’s not as simple as changing the number on the jersey,” he said.

“There’s a responsibility that goes with that. There’s an ownership of the team and the game management that goes with that, sort of the final decisions when it comes to game management are usually with that number.

“Sometimes it can shift to a No.9 in other teams, but that’s also why it’s not a big shift because he’s been doing it already, he is that guy for us.

“So it was time to assume that role, he’s learnt off the best and now it’s time for him to become great in that role and allow some other guys to come through in the No.6

“I think you can see he was our leader. Him and James were our leaders in the way our game went but also assuming that role is really important because then it’s clear for everybody else and it will allow the other players to flow off him.”

Fittler suggested this move last year after they were eliminated from the finals - Don't know what this means for Walker going forward? - I suppose it all depends on how the player playing 5/8 goes- Lam is the the first cab off the rank for this role. Keary can always move back to 5/8 if need be.

Keary at 5/8 has been our greatest attacking strength. I don't like this move. Lam 11 games in 3 years is not the answer. We should have kept Flannigan. Very unprofessional planning for a team of our quality. Now we have no goalkicker and no established halves combination. Ridiculous position to be in. We will struggle.

This is the best scenario I can come up with. I liked Lam last season, he bought energy and had a crack.

I've heard Keary is moving to the right side aswell. We will have one of the best attacking side with Keary, Angus, Manu and Bmoz. Sheeeesh

Keary has been our halfback for a while now, even in Cronk's final season he was touching the ball on average 20 times more per game than Cronk and he was doubling Flannagan's touches last year. Like Robinson said this is just making official what has already been the case for quite a while now.

History has shown that there is no need for a recognised goalkicker either, you just need someone with some ability to kick and a good temperament and with some modern day coaching they'll be more than up to the job. We saw this with Latrell in 2018 & 19 when we went back to back and there were equal criticisms with the departure of Michael Gordon. In hindisght keeping Michael Gordon would've meant we missed out on Fergsuon's 2018 season which was one of the best I've ever seen from a winger and then Brett Morris's 2019 season where I still maintain he was best on ground in the Grand Final. Picking the best 17 you can should always be the first priority, goalkicking is a secondary factor in my opinion.

This could be true given Lam is a left foot kicker and he did build up quite a handy combination with Tupouniua in the NSW Cup who will likely be Cordner's replacement for the first half of the season.

Although from training pics I've seen looks like Keary has still been predominantly playing left edge, hard to read too much into training pics though given you commonly see props on the wing and dummy halves in the centres.

Drew Hutchison should never be mentioned as an option.....unless we are decimated by injuries, he is a slug

BronteRooster told us all months ago.

Some of you owe him an apology.

Would be an interesting running race between him and Kyle Flanno.

As mentioned by Robbo. This is the halves combination to start thr year with. Keighran will be in the mix im sure so to Hutcho. I think Hutch will be our Aubo

Your last sentence sums it up for me. I'm surprised how much airtime goalkicking has received on this forum in the off season.

Makes sense, obviously Radley will be at first receiver plenty also....our attack in the center of the field wasn't the same without Rads.
