clean sweep of victories. good to see.

is the club championship still around? probably not and if it is norths and easts' points probably wouldn't be counted together

Remember buying the paper on a Monday morning and it would have the league lift out. All 3 grades. Club championship. Try of the week (sketched), Hooker competition etc. It was brilliant.

Norths aren't getting many points in Matts or SG Ball - I would very much doubt they will be fielding Harold Matts and SG ball teams for much longer - something the Chooks to look at in taking over the Juniors -

Norths opted not to Field a Jersey Flegg team this year along strangely enough with the Knights and Raiders- so only 10 teams in Flegg.

NRL should make it mandatory that all NRL teams field teams in all junior rep comps - Harold Matts/SG Ball and Jersey Flegg or the QLD equivalent - with the Exception of NZ - Storm are fielding teams in both SG Ball and Jersey Flegg -so maybe only 2 for them and not Matts as well.

Was it the Daily Mirror as i seem to recall dots for the attack and x's for the defence? and lines/dotted lines showing the progression of the movement leading up to the try and the pic of the try scorer - i have number of team photo's like below that older brothers collected- not sure when they started and finished these pics.

As long as the bears have a jnr comp of their own they will field Harold Matts and SG ball/jnr reps - I can’t see them handing it over any time soon. The club would have to fold (for good) before I think they would be taken over or let another team have their area. They have always been strugglers in jnr reps as their comp isn’t the strongest compared to others so I don’t think lack of results phases them - they just want to exist. They haven’t had much to celebrate in their sad history but they are a very proud club.

It is interesting regarding Jersey Flegg though - maybe not worth the resources at that level between jnrs and nsw cup. Roosters are playing their flegg games at north Sydney oval so perhaps it was agreed they would merge the resources for that grade - would be interested to find out more.

No sure if it still exists - could only be for the 9 Sydney teams who are the only ones that have teams in all the comps - Harold Matts/SG Ball/ Jersey Flegg/ Reserve Grade even if feeder club and NRL

I used to like updating the big league Mag at the ground when they gave the full time scores in the lower grades (under 23's and reserve grade-used to also give progress scores ) and the first grade - days of one game on Saturday and 5 on Sunday- the comp ladder points and for an against plus top try scorers/point scorers and the club championship - also used to complete the scrums and penalties boxes plus insert the name and number of the replacement player(s) when players were ruled out and try scores and goal kicks -successful and attempts.

                    18 club championship points available each round for the 3 grade games. - 2 x 3 x 4 x

                    4 points (2 x 2 ) for a win in under 23's- or 2 each if a draw
                    6 points ( 3 x 2 ) for a win in reserve grade- or 3 each if a draw
                    8 points (4 x 2) for a win in 1st grade or 4 points each if a draw

Trouble is though what is after SG Ball for Bears players - those players would have to be invited to try out for another teams Jersey Flegg side to continue their careers - not knowing the players but Norths might only attract players who miss the cut or who are not invited to trial with other Sydney teams junior rep team - their best players i assume would be recruited for those teams junior rep sides.

Pretty much exactly what happens but I think they are happy with that set up - I guess in their minds their best jnrs will get picked up by the likes of the roosters/who ever is their feeder club but I don’t think they’ll ever hand their jnrs over to anyone.

Their Harold Matts and SG ball are the few rare norths jnrs that make that grade and the rest are indeed rejects from other areas - unlike other ‘small’ jnr areas such as us (Easts), as they don’t have an NRL side they don’t bother investing scouting talent from other Sydney districts/Qld/NZ.

I agree that handing over their jnrs to an NRL team (such as us who need more jnr clubs) would probably be more efficient and would in many ways improve their jnr system and benefit those from the area but as I said I don’t see the bears losing their little identity left in NSWRL - they still have many around the club that are very passionate about staying alive and holding onto what they can - even if it’s a few jnr reps and to be a feeder club in reserve grade. For now they have enough funds for that via their leagues club and other assets.

It is a different situation to the Central Coast where no one had a real claim over their jnrs (where Roosters have ‘taken over’) or Newtown whose area was absorbed by others when the club went completely broke in the 80s (ie no say in the matter).

I think in the end, with our current partnership with norths we get the first pick of any talent jnr they may have coming through anyway - the Roosters would the intel coming through if there was anyone worth promoting to our system by association.

This used to happen when bears was Souths feeder club - the most promising bears jnrs/jnr reps got promoted to Souths at the time.

The roosters also have been putting on development clinics for the bears jnr clubs occasionally - so they are part of the process these days without stamping their name on them. If they have any guns coming through - we’ll get them.
