  • Best club position

I have been contemplating an idea for a book that tells the story of each club from the perspective that some clubs have traditionally nurtured a favored playing style that in turn produced footballers who excel in certain positions. For the Roosters, I think that we have produced some of the best locks... Thoughts brothers!

Halves? Most of ours have been bought in but I reckon we've taken a lot of relative unknowns 2 or 3 levels higher than they otherwise woulda gone.

Halves, back rowers and and centres if I were to name 3 positions. We produce lotsa good players though

Who are the locks you talk of?

I reckon the Chooks have had & still have some good props. Artie, Morley, JWH, SST, Ayliffe, John Harvey, Grant Hedger

From the 1930s invincibles - Andy Norval. then later, Dick Dunn. But in recent generations; Coote but also lock was Bunny Reilly's preferred position. Ricko, McGahan, Tobin, and most recently, Liu and Mr Victor!

Seriously who would be a half at the Roosters? The expectations and pressure is over the top, certainly from fans anyway. Looking at the focus on young Lachie despite one game into the season winning 46-4 is case in point.

Pearce, Anasta, Hastings, Nikorima, Flanagan, crikey even Cronk and Freddy (Shittler) copped it! Its an impossible position to satisfy everyone.

As far as locks go I guess my timespan goes from Coote to Radley, ironically two of the best. The locks role has morphed a fair bit though in that time from a freelancing attacker and defensive sweeper to a kind of third prop these days.

Off the top of my head, I thought John Tobin was a bloody good player in the day too.

I didn't mention Ricko and Hughie as I thought they were more backrowers. Two champs.

Gee Id rate Michael Gordon extremely high , very good defender and excellent goal kicker . Silva no slouch either , very evasive in attack and thanks for Lukes name just couldn't remember

Ive always loved halfbacks first & the Chooks have had some good ones. In my time following them I first liked Johnny Mayes then Kevin Horrie Hastings (my favourite all time Rooster) then Gary Freeman then Craig Wing then Cooper Cronk.

                              Silva was top quality.

He was a class act in a pedestrian side at a struggling club, then he left and played with the Bulldogs where he won a comp, which goes to show.
