Roosters crisis: Walker, Suaalii to be named as Keary ruled out for the season

Sam Walker is set to make his NRL debut in the halves next weekend and Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson will be forced to name 17-year-old Joseph Suaalii on his team sheet as the Bondi casualty ward reaches capacity.

Robinson confirmed on Saturday Luke Keary would miss the rest of the year after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament, with nobody around him, in the final minutes of the 26-16 loss to Souths on Friday night

The Sydney Roosters had three players leave the game early due to injuries.

The absence of the experienced playmaker is a big setback to the Roosters’ bid to win a third title in four years.

“He’s the heart and soul of that team ... without him it definitely makes it tougher,” said Souths skipper Adam Reynolds, a good friend of Keary.

Robinson, who also confirmed Lachie Lam would be out for a month due to a knee injury, will rely on Walker, 18, and Drew Hutchison, who has played 15 NRL games, to run the show against the New Zealand Warriors next Sunday at the SCG.

Scans have confirmed Luke Keary ruptured his ACL and will miss the rest of the season.

“Everyone in our top 30 will be named in the 21,” Robinson told The Sun-Herald.

“I don’t know if we will see Joseph, but I will name him. It’s hard to think about anything else other than Luke today.

“He’s done his ACL. He will most likely have surgery in the next couple of weeks – that’s how it usually works – but he’ll see the specialist on Monday.

“We have two halves in Drew and Sam. We believe in those guys, they’ve trained well, so we’ll go with them.“”

The Roosters have two spots available on their roster, but Robinson said they did not have the funds to find a replacement of Keary’s calibre.

Jake Friend is unlikely to return from concussion, but Lindsay Collins is expected to overcome his own head knock. Victor Radley will definitely play after being forced to skip the Souths game because of a shoulder complaint.

Rookie prop Daniel Suluka-Fifita will miss one week after taking the early plea for striking Jai Arrow in the back of the head.

Robinson tried to stay upbeat after the defeat.

“It’s really tough, but what do you do?” he said. “Let’s go. Let’s find a way. It’s what you do. You get disappointed for five minutes, then you get excited for what’s next.

“This is the acceleration of some other guys in our team to go and take opportunities, and it’s up to us to find a way. It’s round three.”

James Tedesco backed Walker and Hutchison, and said the Roosters would remain a force.

“We’re still a top side – I still wouldn’t take us lightly,” he said.

“We started with two convincing wins and didn’t prepare as best we could for a top-four side like Souths. They’ve also had some tough games to start the year and were ready to play 80 minutes. We weren’t.”

As for Walker, Tedesco said: “Sam is only young, he’s 18, but the way he has started the year and trained during the pre-season, he’s definitely shown he’s ready. He’s a footy player, he’s similar to Keary, he plays what is in front of him and skilful with the ball.”

Hutchison backed himself to get the job done if given the chance, and was confident he and Walker could forge a handy on-field combination.

Now 25, Hutchison made his debut for the Dragons in 2015, played four games in two seasons at the Red V before he ruptured his ACL.

“The one thing I’ve learned since I’ve been at the Roosters is to be ready to play anywhere,” Hutchison said.

“We’ll be ready to go next week. Luke plays with such finesse but he’s also tough, which is something to be admired. Whoever goes into his role, he’ll have a big influence on them and modelling the game around how he plays while [encouraging] bringing our own flavour to the team.″⁣

The other silver lining here is that Volkman will get some good game time at the Bears.

If he steps up well we might be calling on him sooner than we thought.

He is another Keary in the making...

          Thats my team!

If Walker and Suali live up to 70% of the hype around them and our forwards can find there mojo there is no reason to not be playing semi finals with that team.
With Cords Verrils Jake and Billy S to come back for added strength and depth.

            As per NRL.com:

Roosters trained with Hutch and Walker in the halves today

Roosters seeking to get exemption for two Norths players to be promoted to first grade temporarily as we only have 19 available and we need to name 21 - not sure which two players

Suaalii therefore to be named in reserve but said unlikely to be selected this week

                  I don't think Manu has the passing game to be a number 6,but he has never let us down at fullback so my team would be;

I would start with the strongest forwards we have to protect our younger debutants and than rest them one at a time so that either JWH or SST are always on the field.
