  • Tactically... what went wrong last night?

Since the 'pen knows best, what went wrong last night (and also last time we played against Souffs)?

As an uneducated viewer it seemed like:
    - We were rushed in defence. I blamed the refs for calling 'HEEEELD' before we'd even touched various players (I swear Crichton was told to release a guy who he had 1 hand on and was still trying to stop). However, it happened in both games. We just didn't seem to be able to stop them from running through the middle of us. It felt like every single time we were tackled they called 'SURRENDER' (and got to grab on for ages) whereas we were being told to get off ASAP, run back and give Souffs some space. IMO something was wrong with our defensive strategy for it to end up like that! Attack too though. Why all the surrender tackles? Did the ref decide we were trying to play the ball quickly by surrendering, so they let Souffs push us back 1m after the tackle & grab on for ~15 seconds because the ref really didn't like our tactic of playing the ball quickly? It seemed hypocritical because Souffs were doing just that... you'd hear 'RELEASE!!!!' and then straight away Souffs would be playing the ball without touching it with their foot or anything (just bouncing out of the tackle and stepping over it, giving them significantly quicker ruck speed & splitting our defence).

    - With all Souffs' possession and penalties, they didn't do THAT much damage last night. IMO our defence has improved, but not enough to put us on the front foot. We were constantly playing catch-up footy.

    - No disrespect but Souffs' defence wasn't THAT good. We got 3 chances inside their ~30 and we scored off all 3. However, we couldn't get out of our own half! Once we were out is was fine but we couldn't do it! Our attack looked really bad! Manu and Teddy just crabbed along sideways, looking for holes (none) or passes (backwards when there was no gap rather than going straight and hard). Reynolds kicked well... were we unprepared for that? He always kicks well and carries some pretty darn ordinary forwards by doing so. It was as if we hadn't done our homework on his kicking game.

    - Our attack looked like a stereotypical '5 and then put up a kick to the left' kinda thing. Latrell played right-wing most of the night and was bloody ordinary at best. But... was our tactic to starve him of space or something? Why did every single kick go to Latrell?!? Yawnion fans woulda had a field day saying 'lol I hate League because all they do is 5 tackles a a bomb'. I jest, but that's literally all we did in attack!!!

    - The same combo of Murray/Walker/Cook made way too many easy metres down the middle.

Having 2 reserve graders in key positions 6 and 9 didn’t help.

Rugby League is a simple game. Their forwards dominated. End of story.

Did any of our players playing hooker last night actually make a run from dummy half or just passed the ball all night to first receiver? Theres 1 tactical blunder as we put no pressure on them up the middle.

Poorly prepared, fumbled and bumbled around in the first few sets for whatever reason and fell too far behind and that was all she wrote.

Seems our players' heads were concentrating on getting Arrow for his tackle on Teddy in SOO 3 last season...instead of concentrating on playing properly in this game, this season.

Did you watch the first half? I recall you were busy with your young son so was not able to watch the first half live, I hope you and the family are well btw......

We were not anywhere near Souffs last night when it mattered.

They put the queue back in the rack once it got to 24 nil.....

I am not reading that much into our late tries as Souffs had pretty much clocked off by then......

Simple reasons - To go sideways you must go forward - way too much sideways attack without setting a platform for this from going forward and dominating the ruck and have the verms back peddling in defence - this sideways attack worked against Manly/Tigers but it was also helped by some not so good defence as well one has to say

Verms knew what the Chooks were going to do before they knew themselves and defended it and the Chooks as a result struggled to make yardage in their sets - you have to have a plan b and also recognise that the better teams will defend better.

Chooks wanted to play suit and tie footy when overall footy was required - to get to point C you go from A to B to C- Chooks tried to go from A to C and forgot about B.

Defence and Discipline was poor as well and they did look frustrated in not being able to play the way they had the previous weeks.

Need to look at their attack now with Keary gone so other players will need to step up in this space- not only the halves and FB but centres/wingers and forwards - defence will need to be A1 as well as reducing ill discipline plays - 6 again's and penalties to compensate for a possible reduced scoring capacity in attack.

See what Big Jack Gibson said about handling defeat - "If the game shot away through discipline or some damn stupid thing you do it tough" - sums up the Chooks effort last night

If our forwards struggled against Souths, it doesn’t look too good for the likes of Melbourne, panthers, raiders and parra.

even against manly and tigers, our forwards didn’t dominate early, we seem to hit the line and stop.

we really need to beat the bad teams to keep some hope of staying alive in the comp until we hopefully work out our halves problems.

We played shite dumb football , they didn't.
Most forwards simply didn't match it with the vermin in hit ups .
Absolutely no dummy half running that I saw.
Some of our players and we all know who gave away far to may stupid penalties trying over the top aggression .
Many more reasons but just refer to the top one and you have the answer

Predictable and slow in attack. The same old problems in defence - Sitili and Joey got found out a few times with bad reads and lack of awareness. And then the frustration kicked in and the discipline went out the window. Souths handed us enough rope and we did the rest. Still, we will be back and we will fight another day. I think we'll learn a lot from last night.

Not many were going through the middle and that was the main problem - trying to go sideways way too much and the vermin seen their last 2 games and were ready for it

We lost through poor attitude, not poor tactics.
