We are one injury away from bringing a park footballer into the team in a key position (hooker or half). I’d rather a highly experienced and athletic Rugby superstar be around to fill that gap if it materialises. What’s more this guy is an inspirational leader and we’re a bit short of them too.

Interesting that Storm pick many of their players including rejects like Addo-Carr and Papenhuyzen based on physical attributes (speed or size), and can convert them into NRL stars. Yet we apparently cannot convert an already talented all-blacks star into a bench utility.

They had a league background though for starters and are also backs- Dummy Halves have to do a lot of defense though - yes it will be said he wont be playing big minutes but still will be doing more defense in these spells than he would do in a whole rugby game. Faster game than Union which is very much stop , start and slow.

he's been an all black for years, wouldn't be able to get to where he is with out great work ethic and skill.

he's got a league background and been a league fan so he knows what hes getting himself into. he will be fine, especially him playing as a 14.

I would rather play an elite rugby player and all black with 66 caps than a bloke who was playing ron massey cup a few weeks ago.

As i posted earlier not a great success with rugby halves moving to league over the years- yes people will say what about Wally Lewis /Ricky Stuart/Cooper Cronk - dont know of others off the top of my head from a halves perspective.

Brian Smith / Brad Burke and Kenny Wright ( i know he also played centre for the Wallabies in Union as well) were not great successes one has to say.

They were inexperienced kids rejected by other clubs and Storm taught them how to play.

So your concern has evolved to fitness? Robbo has already mentioned that TJ would not be ready from a fitness perspective for many weeks.

So you name three great and three not so great but you have taken the glass half empty view.

I don't see a gun All Black amongst them though. Every player is different. I trust Trent knows what he is doing, where he wants him to play and wouldn't be doing it for a handful of games if he didn't think he would have a great impact for us to win a comp. If he thought we had no chance this year and needed a backup hooker then he would have just stuck with who we have and make this year a learning experience for our young guys or sign someone like Baptiste.

The bloke playing Ron Massey cup a few weeks ago( Benny Marschke) has shown great perseverance though to be playing NRL - yes injuries accelerated this opportunity but you have to put yourself in that position - There are a number of Bears players that were playing Ron Massey Cup in that same team including his twin brother Jesse who was in the Chooks NRL 21 a few times.

Not sure if people have watched Ron Massey Cup and or Sydney Shield matches -you don't see players with beer guts or oldies playing- they are pretty fit and a lot would be playing for little or no money - train twice a week and hold down full time jobs - keeping the dream alive so to speak

Defence would be a concern as well in playing dummy half. In Rugby he averages 5 tackles a game when playing for the Hurricanes and All Blacks - wingers make more tackles in league than that

Because a number of posters on here had Keighran as the savior now it's TJ Perenara- Expectations could well be too high or in line with Anzac Day a Bridge Too Far perhaps - I am unsure if many have watched either player play or enough of them though which might be a mute point.

perenara's no certainty to go well in the nrl but our club knows what it's doing.
starting him off as 14 is sensible. for mine he's more likely to exceed expectations and get a starting spot in the halves than fail on the bench

I have a feeling TJ is being bought over to play 6 as opposed to 9..

Obviously as the season goes on possible injury may dictate otherwise but I just feel the initial thought is to partner him with SW!

In saying that I won’t be surprised if he’s eased in off the bench as mentioned by others who on here..
