Only one thing stands between TJ Perenara and a code switch to NRL club Sydney Roosters – income protection insurance.
Perenara is determined to play in the NRL, and is trying to clear the final hurdle in order to join the likes of John Schuster and Craig Innes as
All Blacks who have switched to the NRL without professional league experience.

The Roosters will pay Perenara about $150,000 to join them for the rest of the season to play hooker, covering a raft of injuries including the concussion-enforced retirement of Jake Friend.

Perenara earns about $600,000 a year in New Zealand and Japanese rugby, however, under the standard NRL contract Perenara will only be covered for a career-ending injury on the value of his Roosters contract.

The 69-Test All Black and his management are trying to find an insurance policy to cover his worth as a rugby international, instead of his lesser value as a mid-season league recruit. The insurance cover over a maximum two years for career-ending injuries guarantees 80 per cent of a player’s salary in the first year, and 60 per cent in the second year.

If Perenara, 29, were to suffer a career-ending injury in the NRL, the difference in insurance payout between his league and rugby policies could be up to $630,000.

Meanwhile, the Roosters have re-signed 21-year-old centre Billy Smith for two more years.
how much could the extra insurance be? can't be a huge amount. sounds like it's happenning

Hopefully it isn't a roadblock. Different scale but I think Andrew Bogut faced this issue when he offered to play in the NBL for free when the NBA was shut-down due to various internal dramas.

He was on like USD ~$30m a year though and the issue was that he was worth more than the entire NBL.

Surely Shannons have a policy where he can name his value?

Well yeah it's good news but I'm not banking any success from Billy for at least another 12 months. We've seen it before with Jared and Siosiua on how difficult it is to return from an ACL and watching Freddy and the 8th, Johns explains it that to return to full skills, and courage from an ACL can take as long as 18 months. Sam V has been great but he was having problems in last weeks game so Robbo took him off and put Ben M...whether that was Sam Vs work in progress to return to all systems running or the eye issue, we don't know. I think that what lacks with TJs experience in the game, he will make up with his grittyness (if that's the word), experience in winning and tenacity which we are desperately needed to help out Sam W. TJ Cannot get here any sooner IMO.

Billy is for next year as far as I'm concerned, but I would gladly hope that he proves me wrong.

I also highlighted in that article from this morning an issue that was being discussed last night with Salvo and 1908 about how many games he was going to play in which they said he would only play a few games like Sonny did last year. Of course who knows what these writers know what the agreement with the player and the NRL is but I hasn't to admit that they are at least chasing the news whereas us are just reading it from them so accept it (tentatively) that they may know more,

i'm no actuary and maybe my figures are way off but if he's on 600k a year and would want to protect for the next 5 years then it can't be more than 30k and is probably less

Yes. Surely he doesn't have any more bones or ligaments to break.

Remember when Ryan Cross used to be injured every few weeks? People on The Wall called him Quentin after a young disabled boy who he resembled and who featured on some TV stories.

                    • Good on Billy - can’t wait to see him back in action and is due some luck in his career. The chooks must think he is worth keeping around after everything which is promising of his potential that they see.

Also was watching the all blacks doco on Amazon Prime last night and TJ features a bit - geez if he signs I’m most excited about how he can combine with players like Walker and Teddy. TJ seems to play with a lot of energy eyes up footy and gets people the ball exactly to chest when there is an attacking opportunity. Also seems to be a great support running to back up when needed which would suit us well.

As long as he can adapt in defence, I think he could be explosive for us off the bench late first half when the opposition is tired - especially with the 6 again rule. In defence it seems by his personality he’ll put in 100% - also looks to be a great competitor. Even this move to league is a big risk/challenge for him which reflects his competitiveness.

Billy did his ACL in January 2020. That's 16 months already, 18 months on 20 July. He's been out with a shoulder injury he suffered this pre-season. There's no reason to think he can't contribute to the 2nd half of this comp.

I believe that comment implied that the player returning would be back playing and getting his confidence and condition to its maximum. Billy hasn't played since 2019 and all the training wouldn't equal what match fitness can give you...we shall see.

Yes it is. But no surprise that the opposition teams weren’t chasing him simply based on his great rehab work.
