Throwing Kheirallah into the mix could be the real bolter for an outside back spot..

quite like the look of that team. full strength backrow and frontrow bar kennedy. backline only missing perrett and mini and gives mortimer a chance to have a go at fullback and put his utility value to work (i would like to see us slide him into the halves or onto the bench as a utility in our second trial to allow mini a trial match at the back. carney and tagive on the wings is also a good idea in that realistically, they are the 2 battling it out to start outside moga. moga had to start.
interesting ommissions - leilua and bosden. Leilua not named for newtown or firsts which suggests he is either being rested or injured which i think is good as it gives a few players (like cordner, moga and carney) an opportunity to show what they can do). Bosden named for newtown but i am surprised he isnt getting a gig in firsts considering he is viewed as our replacement for myles. looks like arona and cordner are ahead of him in the pecking order to date. interesting to see kherrilah selected as the utility ahead of dumbrell/an extra forward (cherro, taka, leilua, bosden etc). had a very average firsts debut but has been impressive for newtown at least.
Although its trials, I will only be disheartened if we get belted. pretty strong team or at least strong enough to be within 10 of the opposition considering they will all be a bit rusty and not quite full strengthLast edited by roz; 02-07-2012, 07:04 PM.

Imho Mortimer is just being given a run at fullback to see how he goes, and also give him some experience there just in case he needs to fill in. Indications from interviews with both Smith and Anasta suggests the plan for Morts is to use him as a genuine "utility"... halves, dummy-half -- fullback perhaps. If he nabs a bench spot, and has shown he can go alright at the back, Smith may use him there if Mini goes down during a game. (He seems reluctant to ever shift Perrett off the wing, probably due to his value out of dummy-half.) If Morts goes really well at fullback, I guess he will contend with Sheck, Wells and Alofa for a starting spot in the #1 jersey should Mini be unavailable.

Unless Mini gets injured he will be FB RD 1 no doubt. Mortimer is going to be used in all the spine positions but like I have said in the past Mortimer will play FB if Mini is out. Forget the youngsters. Perrett will be in the side for Rd 1 no doubt.
As much as alot on here dont like him (J Carney) Smith does, he will be in the side Rd 1 no doubt, unless injured.
Im surprised Bosden is not named but it wouldn't surprise me if he did play on Sunday.
I believe Moga & Mortimer are the only 2 that may break into the top 17 that will be at the expense of BJ & Mitchell.

It's not as if Mortimer will play there permanently but a utility who can play FB as well as in the halves and hooker gives us a far betterbench. And I suspect that's where Mortimer will start the season. Whether he stays there or plays well enough to earn a spot in the halves may depend on injury more than anything else.
Good luck to the young bloke, he was treated pretty harshly by Parra, especially Kearney. He deserves an opportunity to kickstart his career again.
NCSupporting the RW&B, through good times and bad times.

Looking forward to having a look at Moga. Mortimer is interesting at fullback, will likely lurk around the play the ball in attack. Carney and Tagive will do the "heavy lifting" hauling the ball back on kick returns. I can't see the Dogs doing much bombing as they will concentrate on their plays and structures. You don't learn much from kicking the ball as high as it can go and then running after it.
Should be a good day out.
