Robinson says talk of Brett Morris’ retirement is premature

    By Sarah Keoghan

    May 5, 2021 — 7.45pm

Roosters coach Trent Robinson won’t concede Brett Morris’ career is over until the 34-year-old himself makes a call on his future.

Morris went down with a torn ACL on Saturday night during their 38-4 win against the Knights, in what was likely the veteran’s last game in the NRL.

Sydney Roosters winger Brett Morris has torn his ACL, scans have confirmed, in a potentially career-ending injury.

But Robinson said a comeback could not be completely ruled out for Morris, who he said would make a definitive call on his career in the coming weeks.

“He hasn’t retired,” Robinson said. “We just need to cool our jets a bit and see where Brett’s gonna make that decision in the next week or two about what he’s thinking there. Brett can do what he wants.”

Robinson said while he’s aware Morris is nearing the end of his career, the final decision needed to be made by the player.

“Let’s not get past where we’re at the moment as that’s in the future. We don’t need to answer those questions right now cause I don’t have the answer,” he said.

Brett please one more year, or half a year and retire in your own term.

I would love for him to just take this time out as an opportunity to reflect, heal up have the rest of 21 to think about what’s next, however on the other hand the man is at the top of his game you could say career best form at 34 with no signs of slowing down until the ACL happened, he loves the chooks he is loved by everyone involved with us right down to every fan, he will most likely feel like he owes the Roosters a debt (which we know he doesn’t) he would love another ring alongside brother Josh.

If I was Brett Morris after 16 years of top grade footy I would want to go out on my own terms then close the book, he has so much to offer, yes we have Iku who is a solid deputy but not much in terms of depth Sualli and Smith are largely unknowns and untested (Smith has a few under his belt and looks likely but has been ravaged by injuries) perhaps another year out of Morris will give Sualli and Smith the time needed to be ready for full time FG.
I have no doubt everyone in the squad mainly Robbo would have told him the same thing, however the biggest influence on his final decision will be brother Josh, the boys want to go out together and if Brett wished that Josh will oblige no second thought about it, Josh could easily go the other way and this is the swan song, either way I’m glad both came to Easts I don’t want to see the end of them this season not by a long stretch.

Just my two cents. I agree though this is a great thread.
