Pearce: Happy but plenty to do
13/02/2012 6:00:58 PM
It was only a trial but the signs were good yesterday afternoon at Belmore.
Despite the constant chopping and changing of the team every player that took the field seemed to slide in effortlessly without interrupting the rhythm of the Tricolours efforts.
Halfback Mitch Pearce was happy with his side’s effort but stood short of being content.
“The biggest sign to me was how easy the transition was in getting back on the field,” he said.
“Normally you feel a bit lost when you are on the field for the first time but yesterday we all mentioned how comfortable we felt no matter who was on the field.”
“It is a credit to the coaches work in the pre season so far but it’s important to realise we have plenty of improvement to go.”
The 22 year old played the second half of the trial and could already see
some of the work on the training field transferring to the playing field.
“In the past you could say we have been guilty of not going so well in the arm wrestle,” he said.
“We have made a concentrated effort to make sure we work hard at winning the forward battle and all the little things that make all the difference.”
“Yesterday I felt we slowly ground down the opposition and hopefully we can continue to work on that.”
A massive pool of players took part in Sunday’s trial including a number of youngsters who took the field for both the NYC and NRL sides.
A pleasant selection headache looks set to await coach Brian Smith come round one as it was difficult to find a below par performance.
“Frank Paul I thought was excellent for us yesterday, as was Tinirau Arona,” said Pearce.
“T (Arona) has been impressive all pre-season.”
On a personal level Pearce was solid in his first hit out for the year and is confident with a few more minutes under his belt, he will be ready to fire against the Rabbitohs.
The Tricolours next trial is against the Tigers at Campbelltown Sports Stadium this Saturday Night at 730pm.

I have to admit I am a big fan of Arona, he has great hands for a forward, is light on his feet and has a big motor and great work rate.
I don't envy Smithy trying to work out which of Arona, Cordner, Guerra, Bosden, Aubusson, Takarangi, FPN gets to be in the 17. I am pretty sure I know who Smith will go with but I really rate the trio of Arona, Bosden and Cordner.
The front row rotation of JWH, Tasi, Mose and Kennedy is awesome as well.

i too really like the look of arona. I hope smith takes a bit of a risk by allowing cordner, bosden and arona fight it out for the starting backrow spot and putting FPN back to the bench. My side would be:
1. Minichiello
2. Moga
3. Leilua
4. SKD
5. Perrett
6. Anasta
7. Pearce
8. JWH
9. Friend
10. Kennedy
11. Guerra
12. Aubusson
13. Bosden/Arona/Cordner
14. Mortimer
15. Tasi
16. Masoe
17. FPN
