  • Parramatta show interest in Waerea-Hargreaves

PARRAMATTA have put Roosters and New Zealand enforcer Jared Waerea-Hargreaves at the top of their wish list for next season.

The New Zealand international is one of the biggest names off contract at the end of this year and several clubs have already expressed interest in his services.

The Eels are one of them, with one source claiming the club is prepared to outlay $1.6 million over four years.

Waerea-Hargreaves's manager, Mike Newton, confirmed that Eels officials were keen on signing the Kiwi back-rower.

''There was interest expressed late last year but I haven't pursued it further at this point in time,'' Newton said.

The Eels have several forwards off contract this year. There will be money to spend if some of them, including Justin Poore, Nathan Hindmarsh, Shane Shackleton and Fuifui Moimoi, move on.

The Roosters are desperate to retain the All Star but, with speculation rife Sonny Bill Williams will end up at Bondi Junction next year, will struggle to fit all their big names under the salary cap.

It is understood the Roosters have re-signed Frank-Paul Nu'uausala to go along with some other key players who have recently been retained.

Waerea-Hargreaves has played 10 Tests for New Zealand and has a good relationship with Kiwis and Eels mentor Stephen Kearney. But Newton stressed that all suitors would have to wait until after he had given Waerea-Hargreaves's present employers, the Roosters, first crack at his signature.

It is unlikely any deal will be struck until there is further clarification over what the salary cap will be going forward.

''He loves the joint, loves the Roosters,'' Newton said.

''Hopefully we'll be in a position to sit down with Nick [Politis] over the next few weeks. I consider Jared to be a blue-chip player, he's a 23-year-old international.

''He's very young, he's marketable, he's very well spoken.

''But up until there is a gauge or framework of where the salary cap will be, I would hasten to say we're unlikely to make a decision until that time.''

Waerea-Hargreaves has been one of the NRL's most intimidating forwards since bursting on to the scene in 2009.

Signed by Noel Cleal having never played league, the schoolboy rugby star has forged a reputation as one of the toughest men on the field and one of the nicest ones off it.

I hope that we keep hold of JWH he was one of our best forwards last year and i can only see him getting better. But at the same he isn't worth the reported 400k Parra are prepared to pay.

JWH is awesome but Masoe, Tasi and Kennedy are more vital to the team. Honestly if he plays out of his skin this year then I hope the Roosters to go great lengths to retain him.

      lol @ Pawwa

Paid 800K /yr for a winger out of game for 2 years

400K/yr for JWH is also excessive

Let's see how his form is this season. We can talk contracts in 8-10 weeks, we'll know where his head is at then.

If they wanna pay that much for him + also foot most of Mortimer's contract with us then be my guest.
He's alright, but not THAT good from what I've seen of him. He also has this habit of taking things personally and spending 80 minutes trying to get back at guys for insulting him whatever it takes.

I'm alone on this one (on this forum) but I've never been JWH's biggest fan. He was an over-hyped NYC player from union who we paid too much for... he's not "the next Sonny Bill." Not saying he's cr@p... just hasn't lived up to all the hype IMO.

They also paid over for Shack ( mind you I was a fan but not for what parra paid for him) I'm a massive fan off JWH, really hope we keep him but not at the expense of Mose Tasi and hopefully a fit Kennedy.

Still can't fathom why we signed FPN for 4 years.. Makes it a real joke if it means we lose JWH.

plain and simple if SBW comes next year both Cordner and JWH won't be here in 2013, which is a disgrace considering the long term contracts we dished out to Symonds and FPN who are no where near as valuable long term as Cordner/JWH.
