Greg Townsend got a huge wrap from Ian Schubert in a recent interview on Roosters Radio. Greg grew up in Paddo. He told me a funny story when he filled in for Fairfax against Wests. He won the man of the match and is still waiting to receive the prize.

He has Cook Islander heritage. Didn’t play in the 2013 GF in any case.

The Roosters may not have the most, although I would think there are more than are listed.
But they do a hell of a lot of education and work training for first nation people. More than some of the other clubs that tout how good they are

Greg often called into the barber i used to go to in the early 90's in Surry Hills and he would have stuff that fell off the back of a truck for sale, i got a few cheap pair of 501 jeans off him once. One time he was chatting away and it was either in under 23s or reserve grade and he had to mark an unknown up and coming winger, apparently this player ran over the top of Greg and scored 3 tries, the player was Chris Anderson.

Great list Mickie , I wasn't aware stumpy Stevens was a Koori , he was a real tough nut with a great hip bump and hit like a sledgehammer in defence he played well above his weight.
Artie the greatest aboriginal player and best forward to ever lace a boot on.

As we technically don't have a current player, Angus does a lot of foundation work with Aboriginal kids I believe. I remember reading about this a while back, but I could be mistaken.

Andrew Walker is the best naturally gifted Aboriginal player I've seen live. Pity he never fullfilled his potential. Unfortunately too young to see Artie play.

Ron Saddler was the best cover defender I've seen.

Timing his tackles to bring them down crashing into the corner post regularly.

Andrew Walker. The most talented footy player I ever saw. But didn’t see it too often.

I'll second that Noosa Rooster. He was one of my favourites as a pre teen. 'Sooty' was East's answer to Ron Coote and Johnny Raper as far a cover defenders went. Launching horizontally to cut down flying wingers in the corner is something that really is a lasting memory of those three.

[QUOTE: we mightn't have the most indigenous players but artie was the best

Yeah we're pretty much a white bread outfit. But true we've had good 'uns. Aren't there some talented indigenes around now at other clubs? That Cronulla Fullback has to be Aboriginal, it's written all over his game. Dane Laurie too. Any relation to Rocky I wonder?
Watching the Broncs game last week I remarked to a friend that the way to counter the rainbow pass was to post an aborigine on the wing. Turned out though that Mead is PNG. Still...

Even though i was very young i remember being at an Easts game at the Sports Ground, pretty certain it was against Souths and it was either 1967 or 1968, i wasn't paying much attention but suddenly the crowd started screaming and when i looked up the Souths player was making a break down the side line then out of the blue this Roosters player came out of nowhere and took the player out in a copy book tackle straight over the sideline, that player was Ron Saddler, he became a real favourite of mine.
Also Saddler was the first Indigenous player to captain the NSW side.

I was a young bloke as well at that time and have great memories of those home games with all 3 grades at the Sports Ground. Free season passes for kids playing in the junior comps and a few of those kids playing there own games of footy over the back of the hill during half time. Great memories.

it was Luke O’Donnell who returned from a hamstring injury.
