  • SST - form dip?

Goes without saying that every Roosters fan loves this guy, his ability is undeniable. For so long I have considered him up there with Papalii and Fonua-Blake as the best front rower in the game.

However he’s been well below his best this year, constantly being found out defensively and seems to be really struggling to make an impact in his carries and on top of that he’s made some really fundamental errors at key points of the game when carrying out of our own end.

    The underlying numbers tell a very similar story too;

Averaging 116m per game which is his worst return since 2016
His tackle efficiency is 87.8% - the first time in his career it’s ever been below 90%
And he’s made 7 errors in 11 games - his worst return in his career

By no means am I writing him off, it’s not uncommon for props to to go through periods of fluctuating form but I just wonder if he’s carrying an injury or if there’s a thought out there that maybe the speed of the game means these types of power runners with less mobility are not going to be as valuable anymore moving forward. It’s really hard to draw a comparison with Papalii and Fonua-Blake who are very similar in style and build as they’ve played such little footy.

I thought he had his best game this season against Canberra, he seemed to be given a licence from Robbo to run a little wider of the ruck but it was his uncharacteristic read in defence that lead to the Horsburgh try and he came up with another basic error early int he game on yardage carry so hard to tell whether it was genuine improvement or just playing against a weaker opposition as there were still signs there of a guy who’s struggling.

Does anyone know if he’s carrying an injury?

Yep down on his blitzing self but was great against Canberra...Im sure he is playing through some injuries .

He broke his ribs a while back and only got 1 game off to recover if I remember correctly, obviously due to our crippling injury crisis. Normally he would have got 4 or so games off to recover but he's obviously been playing through the injury and pain. It happened in the same game that Jared came off after only a few minutes with a possible shoulder complaint.

If he and Jaydub dominate the middle like they did against the Raiders, we won't lose too many.

Rooster_6 paints a good story. His form was poor even before the rib injury though he had a good game on the weekend so let's hope he kicks on.

I believe his niggling ribs issue is still affecting him. I know it takes more than one round off to recover but thankfully we got a BYE this week.

Hopefully the players get some rest and recovery ...especially SST !

Don't forget that SST didn't have much of an offseason as he was recovering from the knee injury that ended his 2020 season.

Also the rotating cast at dummy half has certainly affected our attacking rhythm and go forward.

                I'm not worried about SST.

Rib injury definitely slowed him down for a few weeks. I thought he was much improved last game. Starting to run with power again. Not worried about him at all.

Ok what I’m saying will be somewhat controversial and will get some people riled up but that’s nothing new around here.

I watched the replay of Saturdays game a couple of hours ago and one thing I noticed when Suaalii scored. SST is probably the nearest to Joseph as he gathers the ball and swans dive For his try. Joseph scores and all the players rush to him to congratulate him for his first try in the NRL, except SST where he just turns around and doesn’t look happy and heads back to half way.

What does it mean? Well it means to me that at that point in time, SST looked unhappy. I think Lam goes past him to get to Suaalii but shakes SSTs hand and SSTs face still nothing...BUT if you don’t believe it, check it out for yourselves.

                      Fair enough observation.

Maybe he's playing in pain - that could explain it?

he gives a little clap. probably he was checking who was on the field and was thinking if he had to take the conversion.

Yeah like... 'don't hug me because it hurts like hell' kinda thing.

IMO SST has been great. Haven't notice anything else about him.
