  • Bears RD 13 match thread

Keen to see how our back up roosters go today… Whyte, DSF, Tuku & Volks. Also keep a eye out for the young Fijian Tagituimua on the bench wearing 9 a real hard tough but with skill

Freddy Lussick starting hooker. Moretti was good off the bench last week too.

I think Moretti has a bright future.

Interested to hear how Volkman is going.

Bears on top. That was some Marschke magic last try, he's been terrific. Best stint I've seen from big Fifita too.

Bears dub 30-18. Class from Volkman to set up the last try, Sam Walker esque

Congrats to the Bears. Good win on Old Boys day against the arch rivals. Just wanted it a bit more. Marschke super impressive and Fifita put his hand up for another promotion.

Fifita clearly a class above, deserves his bench spot if Liu isn’t fit for next weeks clash.

Lussick on the other hand didn’t show enough for mine to suggest he should be getting the #9 jersey over Ben Marschke (assuming Verrills isn’t back).

I feel sorry for Whyte because in his limited touches it’s so evident he’s a class player, but he just doesn’t get the service from his halves that he needs as a 2nd rower at this level to show what kind of player he can be.

Jesse Marschke, Ben Thomas, Luca Moretti, Josh Bergamin, Tony Satini & Sulika-Fifita were the Bears best today IMO.

Volkman had 3 try assists and 2 line break assists. Throw in 21 tackles.

                          Fair game from him too.

He had some really nice moments but over the course of the full 80 I thought he just had an ok game overall. He really struggled to ogranise his side in attack which is what I alluded to with Whyte not getting an opportunity to shine, his kicking games was lacking, he struggled to control tempo and still seems to lack an understanding of when to run/pass.

The talent is clear and he's only 18 so don't think I'm writing the kid off or anything. I just didn't think he was up there with the better players today because of those reasons. I think he has a bright future and I could see him competing with Keighran next year for that utility spot, his strength is clearly running the ball... similar to a Craig Wing role.

I'll give Volkman a thumbs up, he has improved a bit each game which is what you want to see. He is pretty confident and composed for a youngster, and I thought his kicking game was pretty good. My only suggestion would be to vary the attack from half by taking on the line (esp big bodies like Manly had today) with his quick footwork. Although the Bears have been dangerous on the wide spread last couple of weeks, which he has facilitated well.
