  • Looks like we're not gonna use our $$$?

Looks like we chased Perenara and that fell through. Now we've got a small slush fund (~$600k?) including Cords' exemption and we're not gonna use it.

I know we're all about quality rather than quantity, but as a fan/member I'd be interested to know why we haven't signed (or at least chased) some sorta backup player given all of our injuries. Presumably nobody on the market (who we can afford) is better than what our extended squad has to offer?

For the record, I rate our systems and players and am not suggesting we NEED somebody else. I guess my point is more that it's interesting that we've decided not to use our remaining cap $$$ (even if it's for some sorta loan deal).

Do we carry over any unused cap funds into next season’s?

Not sure, but I assume not?

I think the simple answer is they cannot directly carry it over. The more complex question is can they do it indirectly by paying players more for the current year?

Cordner's $350k exemption can only be used this year on a replacement forward.

Pretty sure they can forward pay somebody. So Sammy W might be moving on to $500k for next season, but we can pay him an advance of say $300k now and then that frees up $300k in next years cap

            We have another 5 weeks.

See which ten Broncos players become available.

EDIT: From the Broncos carcus I think Corey Oates would be a good buy if the Broncos pay half his salary. Kevvie doesn't want him. Good replacement for Bmoz. Try scorer, good under the high ball and good defender. Run at me.

I hope the Chooks buy no one & give the 600k to the up & comers already at the Mighty Roosters.

I hope they give a little lick of it to Fletcher Baker. He's a keeper.

Aaah great point. If that's the case, I reckon it'd be smart. Front-end load your big contracts so that you've got more room to make future decisions.

It's hard to judge because they are so dire these days. I actually like Corey oates but he seems a Bronco and nothing else.

I wouldn't know if he's past it or not. I'd be more excited seeing Billy Smith back on the field.

                        Yeah same.

Oates is a big dude who handles the ball well and seems to 'get down quickly' to score (great finisher). But yeah. I'm more excited about Smith and Suaalii...

What about this BS rumour that Toops is out of favour with the club and would be a good pick up for the bronx.

I assume this is nonsense from a nobody - haven’t heard anywhere else? Has anyone else seen/heard this?

Teams don't have to spend all their cap i think at least 90% of it must be spent in any given year - I am only assuming that if a team has cap money unspent they can carry that forward and use it the next year or subsequent years

i,e cap 9.5 mill in 2020 and the team spends 8.55 mil (90% ) they have 950k to carry forward to use in the next season or subsequent seasons. i.e they would have 10.450 mill to spend in 2021

The 350k if it was approved for Boyd's rep game injury cap relief would only become available once the minimum 12 games was reached. I would assume the 350k would have to be used in this years cap and not be able to be carried forward to next year or subsequent years as that relief is for a specific purpose not part of the Cap.

I did read an article that the Chooks were looking at having Boyd's full 2021 salary exempt from the cap due to the retirement (if approved) but his injury was in SOO game 1 which was on the 4th November 2020.

The salary cap operates from 1 November to 31 October for each season - so Boyd's injury was in this years/seasons cap year so they would not be able to have it exempted from the cap only his 2022 and 2023 salary.

I haven't heard anything about his re-signing or negotiations so far- hope they sign him quickly a 2 year deal at least
