I’m looking for an economical alternative to Foxtel to watch the NRL, ideally cricket & other sports as well. What do people use/recommend and what does it cost you monthly to subscribe? Are there any outside-the-square alternatives to standard subscription services (ie. internet service via a smart tv etc)?

Most people would be using Kayo. Actually probably the only option for NRL.

ps: they are owned by Foxtel. $25/month min

Do you need a smart TV for Kayo, or do you just stream it through an internet connected device (like a tablet or phone)?

My Foxtel (basic, plus sports) costs $38 a month, can watch it on as many devices as you want, and never have to worry about streaming issues, if you want to watch kayo on more than a couple devices, it cost $35 a month.

if you can get kayo for $5 or $10 a month it’s probably worth it though.

edit: if 4K tv quality matters to you, it is only available through Foxtel at the moment, with a capable TV.

How does that work? They are currently advertising that package for new subscribers at the “special” price of $59 a month.

Ring up to cancel your Fox subscription and they’ll lower the price for you on the spot.
                ..it’ll be interesting to see

If your TV is not a smart TV, get a Google chromecast from somewhere like Harvey Norman - I think they're about $100
Plug that into your TV, download the Kayo app on your phone, then you can stream from your phone to your TV. Sounds complicated but once you set it up it's dead easy.
You can then also do the same with Netflix, Stan, ABC iview or anything else. You still have to pay the monthly subscription fees (Kayo is $25) but chromecast is a great way to go.

Yeah I use them... IMO it's a pretty good deal.

Works. FWIW I have an old Mac Mini (circa 2013) plugged into my TV. I also use it as a backup/file server for the home (it has 2 hard disks) so it's a neat little hub.

Kayo is just all the Foxsports channels + a few others in one subscription.

You can get it for $15 a month at the moment which is great value IMO and like others have said if you push it with Telstra or look at some of their other promotions you maybe able to get it even cheaper.

You may be eligible for the $5 per month pass as well

What is the quality of Kayo compared to Foxtel as in is there any issues with it going down or such. A mate of mine said he's had a few problems with Kayo which put me off from changing

So I rang Foxtel to cancel, and ended up adjusting my subscription. I dropped a few channels I don't use, got rid of one box (I currently have 2 old IQ2 boxes), they are sending me a new IQ4 for free, and I got $56 a month off my current subscription.

Then to cap it off, at the end of finalizing all that, she tells me that because I clock up 15 yrs with them in one more month, I'll be entitled to another new IQ4 box for free.

I have heard the same, mate of mine was watching his sharks, it started buffering and he missed about 15min, and sharks lost, for the extra $13 it cost me to have Foxtel, I wouldn’t consider changing, because all it would have to do is bugger me around once, and I’d be cursing why I changed.
