The Mole: Sydney Roosters on brink of debuting rugby 'sensation'

The Sydney Roosters have discovered their own flying Fijian - and he could be playing in the NRL as soon as next season.

Vuate Karawalevu, a speedy winger with the Fijian flair for scoring tries, started the season with the Kaiviti Silktails in the Ron Massey Cup but soon joined the Roosters' Jersey Flegg side.

"He is from rugby union and scored four tries in his first game of league earlier this year," Roosters recruitment boss Daniel Anderson told Wide World of Sports.

"I originally got sent vision of him in 2019 and made him an offer because I could tell he had something special.

"But he rejected me and joined the ACT Brumbies. Then COVID hit and that was the end of that.

"So he joined the Silktails and came to us from there and has been a sensation in the lower grades.

"Every team we play, after the game, the opposition coach will come up to me and say 'Where did you find that kid?'

"He really is great to watch but he is only 20 and still raw.

"He's well in front of where we thought he would be and but for COVID would be training in the bubble with the first grade.

"He will get his chance training with them over the off-season and from there, you never know…"

The NRL has a long tradition of crowd pleasing Fijian wingers, starting with Noa Nadruku in the 1990s, who was followed by the likes of Akuila Uate, Semi Radradra and more recently Maika Sivo.

Will be interesting to see how he goes. Defence will be the big question mark as always.

And the high ball. Traditionally the Fijians aren’t great under a high ball.

It astounds me when wingers come into first grade and can't catch a high-ball. You'd think they would have had a fair amount of practice over the 10 or so years they have been in that position.
