  • Vermin poach Roosters head of high performance Travis Touma

    RABBITOHS PINCH ROOSTERS’ GURU

We have found one more chapter to the Sydney Roosters–South Sydney Rabbitohs book of feuds. It has been created quietly behind the scenes for several weeks.

The Roosters’ head of high performance Travis Touma recently told coach Trent Robinson he was leaving after a long association that included three premierships.

His job has been advertised for two weeks.

Touma also works for ‘Freddie’ Fittler with the NSW State of Origin team.

Although the Roosters have suffered more injuries than any other club, Touma is regarded as the best in his field.

This is why the Rabbitohs have pounced.

Touma will join the Roosters’ arch rivals in November to start pre-season training.

He already has a relationship with Damien Cook, Cody Walker, Cameron Murray, Latrell Mitchell and Campbell Graham from Origin.

His move to Souths is a coup and vote of confidence for incoming coach Jason Demetriou.

No that can't be right. Only Roosters poach..for any other club it's an astute signing...

trojan horse? not pointing the finger at touma but changing our training after a lot of injuries seems worth a go.
but good luck to him and thanks - we wouldn't have won the 2019 gf without him

I'm not comfy with this. This guy would know all our dirt and trade secrets, likely crafted some. And to the natural enemy. If the move gets our blessing different story, but...yeah, I dunno.

Yeah I'm no insider but presumably after our run with injuries, we've been having discussions with a few more suitable professionals (possible not a 'guru' as there's lots of them out there).

Not blaming Touma but I'm with Robbo in saying that there's no such thing as pure bad luck. We've had way too many leg injuries this year and somebody needs to answer the 'why?'

I only ever knew of him after he played a massive part in winning the 2019 grand final, happy for him to go, might just be a coincidence that injuries have happened in the last two years with a sped up game, but will be nice to start with a clean sheet next year for Ronnie Palmer

Been with us for a long time… will be very weird to see him at another club. I think it comes down to injuries and us needing a shake up.

No thank you. He seems more interested in creating a new fad than building anything evidence-based. I don’t know that Touma’s exit would be a result of our injuries. In 2020 it was concussions and ACLs that cruelled our chances. This year it was ACLs again. ACL injuries in such a dynamic and variable game are very hard to avoid and it is often just that the culmination of factors come together for them to tear. No fault of the performance staff. In sports like basketball and netball the mechanisms are far less variable and you can train the system to deal with certain movement patterns and loads. Lindsay Collins tore his ACL from a direct posterior force. That accounts for something like 1-2% of ACL injuries. And we’re talking about a guy who deadlifts close to 3x body weight and can power clean 150kg like it’s nothing. That’s just unlucky. We’ve barely recorded a strain injury all year which tells me we’re training appropriately in a lot of ways that other clubs are getting wrong. Pretty good acquisition for Souths if you ask me. Will be interesting to see who we can nab.

Indigenous fella going to the indigenous club.

Was he related to John Touma, associate of our own John Tobin?
                              ..it’ll be interesting to see
