  • How is Butch?

    Anyone heard ?

    Not Official

    It's understood Butcher's injury prognosis could well be a lateral meniscus tear requiring surgery, leaving him on the sidelines for four to six weeks.

      That’s a shame. Has been consistently good this year. Brick wall in defense. Get well soon Nat.

        Didn’t look good. Add him to the list.

            I read this as well, as far as I understand meniscus tear heals it self and does not require surgery. timing is about right depending on the grading.
            Remember Thurston did this injury once in Playing for QLD game 2, hobbled off and was available for game 3, 2 weeks later.

              All depends as there are different types of Meniscus tears some which wont heal without surgical treatment - If you tear the outer 1/3 of your Meniscus it may heal on it's own or require surgery.

              The meniscus is the cartilage that sits between your thigh and shin bone that provides stability and shock absorption to your knee. Blood supply to the meniscus is limited, and to avoid surgery the meniscus tear will need to be minor and preferably located in a section on the outer rim of his lateral meniscus where blood supply exists.

              In rare cases, this could allow for the tear to heal naturally and result in a return over the next 2-3 weeks. However, if the tear is in an inner section of the meniscus, or significant in nature in any location within the meniscus, surgery will be required. There are commonly 2 types of surgery used for meniscus tears:
              • Meniscectomy (trim) – removal of the torn portion of the meniscus to decrease symptoms, leaving as much of the normal meniscus as possible. 4-6 week recovery
              • Meniscal repair – stitching the torn meniscus back together, used to preserve as much of the meniscus as possible. Is often said to be a better long term option, but recovery is 4-6 months

              Thurston did his MCL in game 3 2017 and was out for 6 or so weeks

              2018 possible similar injury to Butch

              North Queensland Cowboys captain Johnathan Thurston is set to miss the club's next three to four matches after undergoing knee surgery today.

              He suffered a tear to the lateral meniscus of his right knee during Saturday night's 24-14 loss to the New Zealand Warriors in Auckland and the injury forms another blow as the Cowboys battle to avoid eleven straight losses in the NRL.

                  With everyone that's already out, he's a big loss. Does lots of good stuff with and without the ball that almost goes unnoticed. Whoever takes his spot has a big job to do.

                    I have a family member who did her meniscus this year playing soccer. She was out for 6-7 weeks. No surgery.

                      Teddy did a video the other day where he said he isn't great (and Keighran was still groggy in Monday). However JWH is known to be very flexible for a big man so he's okay.

                        Keighran wont be playing then as it is a short turnaround as well - If Groggy still next day he wont be able to return to non contact training till Wednesday at the earliest and even that is doubtful - Has to be further assessed and passed fit to resume full training . Wont have the time to go though the 6 step Graduated return to Sport Program

                        Initially, complete rest for the first 24 to 48 hours – including mental and physical rest (recovery).

                        1. Symptom-limited activity – daily activities that do not provoke or worsen symptoms;
                        2. Light Aerobic Exercise – for example, walking, exercise bike with heart rate less than ~70% max (no resistance / weight training);
                        3. Sport Specific Exercise – for example, running drills without risk of head contact;
                        4. Non-contact training – and start resistance (weight) training;
                        5. Full contact training – ONLY after medical clearance by a doctor using the NRL Head Injury Recognition and Referral Form – coaching staff should assess tackling and other skills for correct technique;
                        6. Return to play / games

                        Copley looked crook as well with an ankle or leg injury- So Abbey and Moala Graham Taufa are next up

                          This year has been unbelievable injury-wise. Hopefully on averages next year will be relatively free of long-term and season-ending injuries.

                            The concern over N Butch being out is a testament to how much his standing on this site has increased. He is a very solid player that plays above his weight in the middle and is perfectly suited to this new style of VRL

                              His wife just posted something on instagram about his knee and said "nothing too serious has happened, he'll be back soon hopefully".
