  • NRL investigating Tedesco over "squid games" comment

The NRL is set to investigate an alleged incident involving NSW captain James Tedesco and a 20-year-old woman after she claimed the Roosters star yelled “squid games” at her - a reference to the popular Korean Netflix series - outside Beach Road Hotel in Bondi last week.

Tiffany Trinh, who is of Vietnamese descent, told the Herald she is in the process of launching a formal complaint to the NRL over the incident, which she felt was a “joke about her race”.

The Roosters have completed their own investigation into the matter and say they believe the incident was simply a matter of miscommunication.

The club and Tedesco claim he was simply discussing the popular show with his teammates while in close proximity to Trinh.

Roosters chief executive Joe Kelly said the club became aware of the allegation when Trinh’s sister posted about the incident on Instagram on Friday.

“After we found out about the Instagram post we thoroughly investigated the matter,” Kelly said.

“There was absolutely no interaction between James Tedesco with this group of people. We categorically deny that anything untoward occurred.”

Trinh claims Tedesco approached while she was outside the hotel with a friend waiting for a lift home early on Thursday morning and said “squid games” to her before laughing with his group.

Trinh claimed she stood behind her friend who challenged Tedesco about the comment, before the Roosters captain allegedly laughed and asked the women whether they knew who he was.

“It was a group of about ten footy boys, and I was pretty intimidated. It felt pretty bad being laughed at,” Trinh said. “A 20-year-old tiny girl, waiting for a lift home and you have a bunch of guys come up to you and laugh at you for being Asian.

“It was definitely him, no doubt, and the comment was undeniably directed at me, the intent was clear.”

Trinh said she originally laughed off the incident and shared the story with friends and her sister, who encouraged her to take the incident more seriously.

“All the fans idolise him, have posters of him. You can’t just let that slide,” she said.

The NRL said its integrity unit investigates all complaints which are reported to the governing body. Trinh confirmed on Sunday an NRL official had made contact with her to arrange a discussion.

“He’s saying things - drunk or not - to girls who are half his height, half his weight. We are not here to take him down. We are just calling him out for it,” Trinh said.

“I just want the incident to be acknowledged, and for him to be held accountable for his words and actions.”

Tedesco was named the NRL captain of the year at the Dally M awards last month.

Is there a mandatory prison sentence for this offence? I heard there’s a whole section of Long Bay’s maximum security wing dedicated to people who have discussed “If You Are the One” too loudly while having Yum Cha.

Frigging boat people, there ought to be a law.

(One hopes that everyone knows that's sarcasm)

We shouldn't jump to Teddy's defence just because he is our player- We as fans lose credibility doing that. If he has done the wrong thing he should apologise and be punished. If he hasn't, we can all move on. It is that simple.

            It shows two things....yet again.

We have conditioned society to seek out offence and be offended...esp if they can tie the dreaded 'race" string to it.

Also fry the big fish...social media will always embrace your cause regardless of merit or truth.

Let’s let the NRL do their “ investigation “ and see how it goes.

Joe Kelly has said that after an investigation the club believes that he has done nothing wrong. Its his word against hers. I struggle to believe that Teddy would have said this, as it is completely out of character for him. He has a clean sheet as a player and in public hasn't put a foot wrong. I'm not looking at Teddy thru rose coloured glasses or anything, just looking at the facts. IMO I think this girl is looking for her 15mins of fame. And if her claims are false, then she has sunk to a pretty low level by playing the race card

Agreed. My wife (and through that connection children) are all 'Asian'. Wife's Vietnamese, one kid's 1/2 Vietnamese and one kid's half Japanese. I can't comfortably take them to games to support anybody who thinks that racism against people from Asian backgrounds is okay.

They're some of his biggest fans. Fark... I think it's fair to say that Easts' #1 fan is from an Asian background. You p!ss off Wayno and it doesn't matter who you are, you're gaaaawn.

Similar shyte happened to my wife outside a Cronulla v Easts game (in Cronulla). Firstly we paid for grandstand tickets (club officials wouldn't let us in and said "go to the dirt... Cronulla fans only") then while walking back to the car (man their stadium s*x BTW) some random came up behind her, yelled (to shock her) then said an equally random Asian reference. I get it if it's a bogan Cronulla fan, but Teddy? Man I hope not.

Easts seem satisfied with the explanation so I guess we'll just have to wait and see? I dare say there's CCTV footage of the event and if it shows Teddy talking to a group, then two ladies walking up to challenge them then those two are gonna wish they didn't post claims on instagram. We'll see!

If this is where society is today then are these players able to open up their mouths in public, including with family???

True....he should be able to say whatever he wants within his own social group.

I didn't even know what the reference was but apparently it's a Korean reality TV survivor type series.

So...if Teddy overheard the complainant referencing an Aussie show mentioning its title...say "Survivor"...should he be offended?

Crazy people only would find offence either way one would think.

You are an over-sensitive baby. My wife is Japanese and we love saying mock racist shit to each other.

Uh, sorry mate but Squid Games is not a Korean reality TV type series.. Don't remember the part where if you failed a challenge in Survior you'd die. Squid games is a fictional show where people who are in very bad debt risk their lives in order to win a bunch of money to get outta debt. In the show if the players lose the challenge, they die. Ones reality TV while the other is like a fictional horror series.

Not to come off as an SJW or anything but you've kinda misunderstood the premise of the show. As for the situation, if it turns out that these events were true then I would be significantly disappointed in Tedesco especially as the club captain and being named captain of the year this year. But nothing is confirmed as yet so I'll wait to the investigation is conducted.
