•
[QUOTE=SupermanSupportsEasts4Eva ;
About 15 years ago a mate of mine (who has a Chinese background) and I were walking down Elizabeth St on our way to a nightclub. A car with 2 Asians pulled up at the traffic lights that we were about to cross. The bloke in the passenger seat yelled out at us "Harold & Kumar, White castle is that way."Not only were neither of us offended, but we thought it was funny. 15 years later I still think it was funny.
In our society we need to not tolerate racism. However we need to be better aware of when is racism actually occurring and how we react to it.

Your episode sounds like a shared experience Super, the guys in the car being ironic. Had they been cruisin' young white Aussies however, you can bet the intent would have been racist.
During my period as a high school teacher I saw something unusual. During the 50s & 60s the Italians and Greeks mostly copped the casual and not so casual racism (there was a play on the curriculum - The Shifting Heart" which was intended to soften hearts. Whether it did or not I don't know but on one occasion I was marking that section of the old School Certificate which asked " Write about a piece of literature you have read this year and say what you learned from it". One kid wrote, "The Shifting Heart" is a play about a migrant family in Melbourne who are treated horribly by their Australian community. People call them names, throw rotten fish over the fence and they bash the son. What I learned is that if this keeps up we'll soon be at war with the wog countries".
But I digress. What I saw was a much different response from Lebanese - they called themselves "wogs" in a defiant way and they took no shit either. Cronulla happened after several earlier incidents with Lebanese where the Aussie Shire mugs came off second best. The riot was intended to show who were the real bosses and the aftermath was a Leb counter attack on that - no backdown, no cop it sweet. This was different to the reaction of any prior migrant group including the Vietnamese.
In 40 years the population has risen to 25 million and the Western Suburbs are now brown. Whitey's day has gone but we're still clingin' to that Union Jack our "we were here first" talisman and, of course, the Abos don't count.
Cronulla happened, from what has been detailed by beachgoers, and by other reports, one a 9 doco...because of people being intimidated off picnic tables at the beach, theft, etc...the last straw being a young teen lifeguard having his eye socket broken in an assault.
5000 people marched at the beach in a protest rally.
Around that time a certain foreign flag was being flown everywhere, and hung over road bridges.
"Under new management" videos on Youtube.
Texts circulated.
Didn't surprise me that patriots in utes flying the Australian flag turned up at the beach on protest day. Other patriots by public transport from as far away as Penrith.
No surprise to me that the Eureka flag was draped over a balcony near the beach.
No surprise to me that one guy was shown on video saying, para:
"Our grandfathers fought for this land, and we're not going let anyone take it away from us." ( for which he later apologised).
One young surfer type guy had written on his chest:
"We grew here, you flew here".
Think he was arrested and tossed in prison for that one.
It was a saying used by Hawaiian surfers at surfers from the US mainland.
Hardly a prison offence.
The politicians nearly fell off their chairs in shock at 'Cronulla' protest day.
Most citizens did not.

• Well certainly Tele readers and the Jonesey audience didn't. My interpretation rings truer.

• [QUOTE=The Axe; You want to see madness? The cartoonist Leunig was sacked for a cartoon he published on social media. The Dan Andrews brigade pressured the paper and he was sacked for not following the MSM narrative re supporting the jab. I'm tired off all this tyranny and people telling us what we can and can't say.

Well regarded for his ironic whimsy in the past, it would not be unfair to say that Leunig has, in recent years, become a senile wing nut.

"The Dan Andrews brigade"? AKA epidemiologists and other scientists?

You're tired? A looney conspiracy fellow traveller who, despite actually seeing the dramatic effect of vaccination on infection case numbers, still demands a contrary voice reflecting loopy opinions you've read on the Internet or heard from some deluded drunk down at the pub. Save us please.

Looking at the cartoon, is that even Tiananmen Square? I thought that was that charismatic old dude whose house got re-zoned as a highway in China (and he just stayed there patiently until the military forced him out).

I disagree with anti-vaxxers and am glad I live in a city where more than 99% of people have their first dose (so there's no debate over it). However, Leunig's an iconic cartoonist (an official 'Australian living treasure') and he coulda been saying ANYTHING there. My mum (who is fully vaccinated) enjoyed his commentaries on the matter of lockdowns/vaccines as they reflected her experiences during lockdowns...etc. She's not against lockdowns and vaccines. But like... she's approaching her 80's (similar age to Leunig), single, lost her main house to the bushfires and has been unable to see her sons/grandkids for quite a while now. She has a right to feel a bit trapped IMO.

Everybody who's a bit different seems to get accused of being a horrible person and cancelled these days. Sigh. Clearly Leunig was using hyperbole and does not think we're living in communist China with tank-mounted syringes being fired at us from all angles. Surely a cartoonist of all people have the freedom to use a bit of hyperbole and get people laughing about stuff.
Well said Ism.

The cancel culture is truly disturbing and will affect all of us in some way....relo, friend, colleague or directly ourselves. It's happening nearly every day and goes largely unreported.

Just on cartoons (which have been particularly targeted). They are such a brilliant thing when done with skill and humour. Beats a movie or book or TV show in capturing that mix of truth, satire, wit. In just one screenshot....may they never die.

Nothing because its all an over reaction.
If you were walking down the street & someone sang out kebab would you think that is racism?

There was an All in the Family episode with Sammy Davis Jnr in it - he left his brief case in Archie's Taxi and went to Archie's house to pick it up

I would laugh too and I do. I have had all kinds of weird stuff said to me over the years and I just roll with it. I was playing golf in Macau once and I ended up playing 9 holes with some random Chinese guy. He looked me up and down and told me I looked exactly like Adam Scott. I smiled and said thank you but I can tell you I could only dream of looking anything like Adam Scott. I'm ten years older, heavier, different colour hair and basically look nothing like him.
