  • Sam Verrills

With B Smith looking more and more likely to sign on, I wonder where that leaves Sammy. Wasn't spectacular this season but the guy is a premiership winner, and still has value IMO. I wonder if he could be moulded into an Aubo type player. Off the bench every week and able to fill in at 9, 6, 13, or the back row. I hope we don't lose him because I can't see him succeeding as a 9 long term so would hate to see his career fade away, but I think he is a player worth having.

We will lose him if Smith signs. I can't blame him. Too good to be at Norths - no future at Easts with Watson's arrival.

Not convinced we will lose him if Cheese signs. With this year's touch footy rules Robbo was shifting towards having multiple playmakers on the field and keeping them fresh. I could see Verrills, Cheese, Radley, and Watson all playing 60 minutes. Walker also not yet considered an 80 minute player so some of his minutes could be taken up by Watson.

I doubt he will languish in reserves when teams like Parra are on the lookout for decent hooker without the premium price tag.

Watson is not purely a hooker, can play any position apart from maybe prop or the second-row.

The storm can seem to manage with 2 or 3 quality hookers in their roster....didn't they have Cam Smith, B Smith and Harry Grant all in the same roster once?

I think Lussick or Marschke would be more concerned if they want to play first grade.

Are you serious? We’re in this very dilemma because of how the storm have managed their roster.. storm can’t keep smith being second fiddle at 9. We would be the same with Verrilis.

What dilemma??? Almost every team has 2 quality hookers in their roster....all premiership winners usually have 2 top hookers....this yr Api Korasau. Mitch Kenny, Storm in 2020 had both Smiths, Roosters in 2019 Friend and Verrillis, in 2013 we had Friend and Mortimer etc etc etc.

I remember Tedesco in an interview towards the end of last season saying something like "he's the future at number 9 for this club" when talking about Verrills. I reckon Sam will have a vastly improved 2022 with the knee and eye problems hopefully behind him. I'm in the minority but I hope we don't buy Smith.

How long's Watson staying for? I got the feeling he was just here for a year or 2 while deciding what step to take next.

IMO he mighta lost some value because Newcastle s*x. If he has a cracker in 2022 playing either #9 or #14 (honestly dunno who will be picked) then he'll be able to score another $500k+ contract rather than having to go to England/France. Too early in his career for that IMO. He can still be a starting NRL player.

That's how I see it. We're a development club, not a transit lounge. You take a pay cut to come here because you wanna up your value for future seasons... coz a year will Robbo will always increase your market value.

I reckon if we sign Smith then the better of Watson and Verrills will stay. That or one will score a $$$ contract elsewhere (more likely Watson) and Verrills will move to #14.

Marsche and Lussick probably won't be with us long-term. Again... their best bet is to train with our squad, hope for some 1st grade and then hit the market up for a $$$ contract with Brisbane 2.0.

Losing a player doesn't have to be a sad thing. Lotsa players give it their all under our systems then use our good name to get $$$ contracts. IMO that's where you wanna be at. Kinda like what my employer's like. Previous employer kept people for 30+ years but they were all dead weight that nobody else wanted to pay as seniors/managers...etc. Current one works you hard and has a lot of churn but everybody who leaves is going because they've scored a $$$ promotion. Good work culture IMO.

Verrilis can easily play starting 9 at another club.. he’s too good for the bench.

                    14.Verrilis
                    15.Watson

We have had worse and less balanced benches this yr.

Have u noticed the amount of injuries in the last two yrs. not just the Roosters but all around the league?.

Imagine if say the Panthers decided to release Burton to the dogs this yr...like they had Cleary, Luai and even Tyrone May in the half's...releasing Burton would probably have cost the panthers a premiership

Point is, u cannot have enough quality players in your roster...injuries, suspensions, origin, resting players etc are all part of modern football,

So just because things don't fit now...doesn't mean players like Sam V won't play much in 2023.

2 hookers works in todays game, Smith is not an 80 minute player. We can get the best out of both of them.

Yeah this is all well and good from your side of the fence.. but if a rival club are smart and offer him more money and the temptation of being a starting 9 and the go to rather than playing behind Smith, for his sake not the clubs he would be mad to reject it no?
