Beetson was the first indigenous Australian to captain a national team in any sport forget rugby league the guy is a national icon. Somebody should have a serious rethink and change this immediately i wouldn't be surprised if the indigenous population has a bit to say about this in the coming weeks,

If someone could actually use that name they would make a fortune at the footy.

ron coote is worth a stand but i would have gone for artie or freddie.
garrison stand is crazy. what's people playing cricket nearby got to do with a footy stadium? if the're going to play silly buggers with stand names might as well call it the hot dog stand.

I liked those Vili's pies but I assume they may replace them with Garlo's pies if Souffs become squatters at the new ground

3 October 1903 : the Sydney Sports Ground opens on the site previously occupied by the Victoria Barracks’ rifle range. Celebrations over two days included cycling, motor-racing and band performances.- The ground was original used for Football , Athletics and Cycling

Roosters home ground in the eastern suburbs & our greatest ever player doesn't get a stand named in his honour. What bullshit

if the army vacated victoria barracks and they built a footy stadium there then it would be appropriate to name one of its stands the barracks stand but an old rifle range doesn't cut it for me. rifle ranges are rubbish tips with a few targets on them. of all the terrain involved in our military history that is worth commemorating the area that the new ground will occupy might be at the bottom.
they should decide which sport is going to be the dominant sport at the new ground and name the fourth stand after someone from that sport - i.e. they should name it the beetson stand.

see everyone when the footy starts - go easts!

The SFS was originally built primarily for rugby league. On that basis name the new stadium after the founder of rugby league JJ Giltinan or the Dally Messenger Stadium.

Anyone seen this article....paywalled for me.

The reason Artie Beetson was rejected.

Why are the stands even being named? The SFS has a short history and trying to link it to the old Sportsground or SCG is absurd. Are we going to start naming the stands at Homebush? Artie has no relevance to the SFS at all, not born here and never played at the ground. He coached a few games at the ground and that's about it...I mean seriously he should have never been considered. I would make a rule that a major sporting venue has to have at least 50 years of history before stands can be named, just absurd they are being done now.

Most likely did more on that site other than just firing and bayonet practice though - 1903 just after the Boer War and not long before they took on the Non Cricketing Germans/ Austrians/Turks etc - WW1- Not quite sure why it's the case but Cricketing Nations are more stable and resolve differences on the Cricket Grounds and sporting field whereas non Cricketing ones resolve their's via Military means i.e Germany WW1 and WW2

The article mentions the British army's connection to the precinct, but I remember always passing an Australian army facility right next door to the Sydney Sports Ground before it was demolished. At that stage it was used as perhaps a depot or barracks? The site of both the old and new SFS's stand over that ground, so that would be equally relevant in giving a nod to the physical history of the site, IMO.
