  • Missing Money- $350 k -Where did it go?

Just wondering does anyone know what happened to Boyd Cordner's $350k Rep footy injury Salary cap relief funds in 2021?.

The next 2 years (2022/2023) the Chooks receive salary cap relief for the last 2 years of Boyd's contract worth approximately 800k a season as it's not included in the cap and thus is available to spend on other players.

Not sure if we ended up getting any relief or anything. My reckoning is...
    - Morris... nothing as it's a 1 year contract.
    - Same for Friend... 1 year contract.
    - Cords is off our books now (so no 2022-23 salary needs to be paid) but we're unlikely to get any bonuses. If we do, it'll be one-off chump change that we'll probably use to reward an existing player or lure somebody who has already signed.

I thought we only had the option to get a replacement in the 2021 season to the value of $350k. We didn't spend it so it's gone

        Sounds about right.

S*x but doesn't really bother me. I actually think the NRL were quite generous last year in providing flexibility to cover for injuries.

I think we were eyeing off Peranara but he bailed on us? It then became too late and (if people will reserve their biases for a moment), Copley was the only viable late-season signing.

We didn't really need an unwanted, $350k player for a few months. We needed Haas to replace Cords, Cheese to replace Friend, 'Trell to not be a d!ck to Manu and the Moz brothers to be bouncing energy off each other. It wasn't to be and signing an unwanted, $350k forward/utility wasn't gonna cover our losses.

Give it up. Nobody here knows how much anyone is paid or how the club manages the salary cap.

The dispensation was only able to be used for a "like player", and was only available because Cords last injury was received in Origin - it's there to compensate clubs for players injured during representative fixtures only. It also had to be used by a deadline during last season (which escapes me). Friend's, Keary's, Collins & Morris' injuries, because they happened in normal club fixtures, are just tough bickies. To the best of my (limited) knowledge it was not used.

As part of the NRL rules, clubs can apply for salary cap relief if a player is medically unable to continue playing, except when in the final year of their contract.

Thus if Cords medically retirement has been approved his salary will be exempt from the cap no matter who (club or insurer) is paying it for the next 2 seasons (2022/23) - 800 k or so per year.

                  Similar to Burgess

Maybe they let us buy Copley and whoever else filled in (I can’t recall lol) with it, I know that’s not what’s stipulated in the terms but Vylandys if anything’s seems like a man of compromise.

It's a mystery as they applied for it with obviously an intention to use it and i assume it was approved but crickets on what happened to this 350k - had to be a like for like player - i.e backrower

One of the problems with the NRL is the lack of transparency - It's time the salary cap became transparent as well to show what clubs are really spending - It would knock on the head all this innuendo of what clubs spend and how they can fit all these players in under the cap etc.
