  • Robbo's presser appreciation thread

    After hearing the Cows say that teams like us always get better treatment from the refs last week, I thought Robbo gave a masterclass on how to do a presser properly.

    In particular I liked it when a journo asked him whether JWH was getting unfairly targeted by the ref, the said something like 'hang on so you're saying he's unfairly targeted? Is that what you think? Regarding that incident, all I'm gonna say is that it's the first time I've seen it penalised and I don't think it's a problem that the NRL's trying to stamp outta the game. I've never seen this get penalised or put on report before so it'll be interesting to see how it goes'. Teddy then chimed in noting that it's happened to him a couple of times, he's never objected to it and he didn't think there was any aggression or ill-intent about it.

    Other than the classic moments when Nick hands Robbo the company card and says 'blast those muddafukkaaaz!!!' I think Robbo consistently comments on incidents and shies away from calling the game corrupt/biased/lacking in integrity. How he does it is a masterclass for us all IMO.

    There was certainly a hilarious irony to Todd Payten choosing a game vs the Roosters as a platform to insinuate that there is intrinsic bias towards the top teams.

    I mean, our penalty stats are the stuff of legend. The greatest statistical outlier in all of sporting officialdom.

    Maybe wait until a game vs Souffs, Toddles, before making such a claim. You know, the team that has beaten us in the penalty count probably 23/25 times we've last met.

      I spoke with Robbo on Thursday and I said to him it must be pretty difficult to handle the press, especially after a loss. His comment was that he just imagines that he’s talking to us the supporters.

          I just watched that press conference. It is Robbo at his finest. Tedesco giving nothing away with his facial expressions. Robbo did say this and I'll take the time to transcribe while I'm waiting for my darkweb deposit to clear;

          Asked about Walker and how high he is on the "talent" meter that Robbo's seen in his time;

          "Talent wise - extremely high"

          "But, and this is not a slight on Sam, just talent doesn't cut it in the NRL. Teddy had talent when he first started in the NRL, but so many others with talent just drift in and out of their careers. We get them with talent, but we're interested in how hard are you going to work, are you a team player, and when it gets uncomfortable like it was out there tonight, are you going to roll your sleeves up? This wasn't a breakout game for Sam, but he is on the right path."

          Deposit cleared.

            Robbo knows how to manage the media. He is one of the few coaches who doesn't allow the bias towards his team to cloud his judgement when addressing the media. Probably because he has the best interests of the game at heart. That's why on the odd occasion when he does blow up everyone takes notice of what he is saying. Unlike other coaches who continue to whinge whenever their team losses, rather than take responsibility for a poor performance.
