  • Chooks pivotal clash: Volkman to lock horns with young Dog

    KELSEY HOGAN - JERSEY FLEGG
THEIR NRL side might have lost against the Dragons on Anzac Day, but the future of the Sydney Roosters looks bright because their under-21s are leading this year’s Jersey Flegg competition.

As the under-19 SG Ball side prepares for its grand final this weekend, the Jersey Flegg outfit is sitting in first place in its competition.

The Bears are also third in the NSW Cup, so there’s no doubt a wave of gifted juniors is filtering through the grades in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

Fullback Ethan King, star prop Zac Montgomery and dynamic halfback Ronald Volkman are among the young Roosters leading from the front to show what it takes to be an NRL contender, and their teammates are following suit.

“Ethan’s in the NRL squad so he brings back some of that experience to the side, and Zac Montgomery has been leading us in the middle from the front row, so they have been playing really well,” the Roosters’ Jersey Flegg coach Anthony Barnes said.

“We’re hoping Ethan can push up to the next level but he hasn’t played a lot of Flegg, so we will try and get him some games there and then he will be looking to progress. That’s certainly where he’s earmarked to go.

“We’ve had a few players in and out but they have all done their task and stood up to the job.

“We’ve only dropped a couple of games and are at the top, so it’s been a good start for us and we’re looking fairly strong.”

The Roosters’ clash against Canterbury in round 8 will include an exciting match-up between two star playmakers – Volkman and the Bulldogs’ Bailey Hayward.

“The Bulldogs are a solid side,” Barnes said. “They had a few players out last week when they got struck by Covid but I’m sure there will be players back this week.

“They have a good half in Bailey Hayward. He was with us but he went to the Doggies.

He gets them around the park really well.

“Bailey is certainly a good kicker of the ball, has plenty of time to catch and pass, and will be one to watch out for.

“But Ronald Volkman has been really good. He’s been between us and North Sydney.

He’s a different sort of player but similar in ability to Bailey. They have a lot of skill and do a lot of drop plays.”

I wish we had a good young and fast winger coming through.

Might need to look up north somewhere in Queensland or at the Silktails for someone young and fast.

i watch for him in matches but is limited to hit ups as all our attack is to the left because JT can’t teach Lam and our spine to pass left to right. Most matches VK catches a cold, just like Joseph Suaali did at Bears

Volkman’s leaving. I have no interest in his development and career now.
