      1. We don't have two experienced middle third players (Myles & Ryles)
      2. We don't have a player with anywhere near the creativity of Carney

What you say is right and at any normal club after 2 years the coach should have the roster he wants however I think the 2010 success lead him into a false sense of security and it wasn't until the failures in 2011 that the players true colours came out. Carney & Myles were recruited before he came here and they are both gone for their behavioural issues, to me it seems Smith only really started to get to the real issues at the back end of last year.

If we can show continual improvement as the season progresses and the young players continue to develop then Smith should definitely see out the 4th year of his contract, I'm not expecting any dynasties like yourself. Realistically speaking the development of our youth is going to take some time but it's the only way if we want to remain at the top for a long time. Melbourne, Manly & Brisbane's success is all based on the development of young players along with some smart recruiting.
      Excellent post!

Admittedly I don't rate the midget either but he has defended well this season. No real problems.

He's just a bit short and wide.

              Hi all
Just thought I'd throw in my 2 bobs worth.

Each week Brian Smith selects the team to play from his available roster, however the challenge would not be as easy as just picking the best team to beat Team ‘X.’
The challenge would also be management of the Team’s and Player’s morale.

              Brian has probably asked himself,
              - Should I drop player ‘A’ and give this promising young gun (player ‘B’) a run?
              - Do I wait until the Team losses a game before making this change?
              - What do I say to player ‘A’?
              - Will Team ‘X’ target player ‘B’?
              - What if player ‘B’ has a shocker?
              - What if I have to now drop player ‘B’, how will I keep his spirits up?
              - How do I tell player ‘A’ we want him back because player ‘B’ failed?
              - How will the morale of the team be affected?
              - What are the best longer term options for the individual/team?
              - etc etc etc

Under Smith, the dropping of Anthony Mitchell to Newtown appears to of been handled very well, with Mitchell having a great game for Newtown. And Daniel Mortimer also appears to have grown in confidence since leaving the eels.
Smith will make the hard calls if necessary, Ryles and Piggy for example.
Dropping a senior player or losing one through injury though, may have a detrimental affect on the team, especially a young team, a bit like removing the orange at the bottom of the fruit shop “display pyramid”. Some skills are hard for the outside observer to see, the younger players may look up to this player, or he may have that “steadying influence” over the whole team.

For example, would you throw Moga in against the Storm?
And if you would, how would you manage the dropping of another player, keeping in mind team harmony, and managing the long term best interests, of the two individuals concerned?
Brian so far appears to be doing a good job. He has a talented young team, with players full of passion and the drive to succeed.
Some good pre season results, and two wins from three on the competition table, are showing the team what they are capable of.
Experience will be gained, and hopefully confidence too, one week the team had no attack the following week the team tried to offload at will, often resulting in poor ball control.

It would be interesting to hear the plans, goals and expectations of all the players, the coach, and the club, for this year and the following couple of years, because it does appear like this year, is a “Preparation Year,” for a full out assault, on the 2013 Premiership and beyond.

They get hundreds of thousands of dollars to play rugby league.

If they can't handle getting dropped they can fuuck off.

Pick the best team you've got and play to win the fuucking game, it is that simple.

Anything else is irrelevant and surplus - the two points week in, week out should be the focus, nothing else. If we have to drop Braith because we have better players, it shouldn't matter that he is on more money or is the captain of the side, he should be wearing a Newtown jersey.

It doesn't happen that way - but it should.

Keeping a player in the side for "morale" when in reality he isn't worthy of a spot (Anasta, Mini, Carney, FPN, even Mose at the moment) is ridiculous.

Thinking of morale? Doesn't it work both ways? Watching a player continually not perform, surely that is bad for morale? Hmm. I'm with blindfredddy, just pick the best team to win, irrespective of stature, time in the team or club.

19 year olds don't think like that. They get dropped their gen z egos kick in and confusion reins.

I'm not talking about the 19 year olds - there aren't any in our team who deserve to be dropped, off the top of my head. If anything the 19 year olds deserve promotions.

In fact, it's the most senior players that should be given a rocket up their arse or a retirement ticket. If they can't deal with it, tough titties. Goodbye Braith, Mini and FPN, in a world where the coach has balls and actually runs the football side of things at a club.

What a world that would be.
