  • The Bondi wall

In just 6 month Jason Ryles has turned the Bondi wall into the Bondi rubble.

That’s quite an achievement. Buy of the year.

It's a combination of things though which starts with the inability of being able to play at a consistent level for 80 minutes week in week out and the lack of attention to detail with the basics of the game.

Parra played one of their best games of the season one has to say in both halves - attack wise in the first half and defence wise in the second half.

Parra play a certain way with strong carries / angle runs and offloads which draws the defence in and opens teams up for the more expansive play in attack as well and how they beat Penrith.

So one can say that a game plan that can beat both Penrith and the Storm if successfully implemented is a game plan that will beat all other teams as well.

Cue David Attenborough's voice..."The Bondi Wall was a phenomenal sight to see at various times between the years of 2013 to 2019..in the famous eastern suburbs of Sydney Australia..but sadly it eroded over time due to wear and tear"...

When you replace too many bricks with styrofoam there isn’t much a defensive coach can do to keep the wall strong.

having our middle bookended by Crighton and especially sitili destroys our defensive shape. Neither of these 2 ****wits have any idea how to hold their position. Just constantly rushing out, ball watching, and falling for obvious dummies. It’s maddening.

sitili I think at least tries hard but just doesn’t have it, while Crighton clearly knows how to defend but is one of the most cynical players I’ve ever seen. Simply doesn’t give a **** most of the season and only puts in when he feels like it

There’s a strong case against sea walls and allowing the sand dunes to shift with different tides throughout the year.

What about Sitili last night. Did you see how many he time he kept chasing a player right leaving a MASSIVE hole in defence? That’s school boy stuff.

When did we last have our Bondi Wall?
                  It wasn't 12 months ago.
How do you replace Cordner, Friend, Liu, Jmoz and Bmoz in one season?
Our young bulls are nowhere near ready to take over.
Cheese will help but we need at least another high quality forward next year.
I hope we find a way to get Haas.
A bit harsh blaming anyone really. Just a big gap between our ageing roster the last 12-24 months and those coming through.

IMO there are 2 resons that the wall has crumbled. Both of equal importance. And both require us to adapt asap (hopefully before next season.

                    1. V'landys ball has new rules that unfortunately don't reward the old style strong defensive structures. The 6 again rule is so poorly (unfairly, there I said it) officiated. Our team is yet to adapt to that style of defence. Even when we aren't conceding points we are still giving away 6 agains and penalties. Which wear our players down and lead to points down the track.

                    2. The foundation bricks in the wall haven't been replaced. Cords, Friend, SBW, LOD, Maubs and the Morris boys were all amazing defensive players and held the wall together. None have been replaced. Even Cronk and Pearce were considered among the better defensive halves in the comp. JS is the only solid defender (and that to on the wing) that has come in during that time. We haven't replaced our defensive players with the same quality. And this puts more pressure on the other strong defenders like JWH and Rads

Only the TOP 5 teams have better defence than us..... and TWO of them are better by less than 1.5 points per game. Let's just quit the league because we are obviously useless.

                        The wall is no longer!

The 6 again rule was brought in to dissemble it.

Its all about possession and attack.

this is the most concerning thing, we have some great attackers and you'd figure we'll click on that front but it will be that much harder if we're conceding lots of points

We kept a shit hot attacking team to a big fat zero in the 2nd half last night. A few of those first half tries against us were nigh unstoppable, by any team.

The ref had a big 10 and the game was played at a breakneck speed. We did well under the circs I thought.

The Bondi Wall was built prior to the PVLeague advent. Its more like Super League now, very hard to dominate with defence like the pre 2019 era.

the second half shows we have it in us to turn it around this year but as good as parra were in the first half there were a few tries we should have stopped. we need to learn our lessons.
